I found an M that was painted yellow on most of it (not the tin work) at one time, and then red. What is the deal with that? I have never seen one that way, only all yellow or all red. Thanks

During some lean years IH thinned the paint to the point it was a yellowish orange. It might be one of those.

1946 in particular. Red pigment was in short supply so they started with an almost plum color and added yellow to redded it up. The yellow outlasted everything else. The paint would begin to turn orange and would be closer to yellow before it quit fading. I agree with you, that may be a strong possibility depending on the year of the tractor.

I have one that started life being all red, then was purchased by a county roads dept. and was painted highway orange right over the top of the red. Now that doesn't sound too bad except for a year or so later all of the county equipment had to be changed over to construction yellow and, you guessed it, was painted yellow right over the top of the orange. It gets worse, the county owned this M for about 20 years, and it recieved a fresh coat of yellow every year. All without the benefit of sanding or any other prep work. I would imagine that the M you found has had a similar life, except it was repainted red at some stage of its life.
