Farmall c crank pulley

Does anyone know how to remove the crank pulley on the Farmall C. The tractor is a 1948 or 49. I don't know if the pulley is on a taper or threaded. I see no bolt in the middle of the pulley.

El Toro is correct. The puller shown in the link he gives is the best way to remove the pulley. If it is an original '48 or '49, there won't be a set screw, but look anyway. The pulley is just a press fit with a Woodruff key - not tapered or screwed on.

There is a 1/2"-13 tap in the end of the crankshaft. You might have to clean a bit of dirt out of the end to find it. Screw a long 1/2-13 hardened bolt in the end of the crank, and push against the head of the bolt with the hydraulic jack as shown in the picture. I have the dimensioned drawings for a similar puller if you would like them. Used it on my '48C recently. Jeff

Look for a set screw in that damper pulley. You may need a puller like this, that this man designed for a CUB using a hydraulic jack. Hal
PS: You can have one made for $35.00 to $50.00.

When you remove that damper pulley. You need to inspect the area where the front oil seal contacts the surface of the pulley for any grooves. Chicago Rawhide has speedi-sleeves with
a new seal to correct that problem. The new sleeve is pressed on over the worn area. Hal

Use the 1/2"-13 tap in the end of the crankshaft, a bolt, and a stack of washers to push the pulley back on. Several on this board have suggested heating the pulley first. Haven't put mine back together yet, but I am a little concerned about a hot pulley damaging the new oil seal.

What's the holdup on that engine? I'm justing kidding. Is that crankshaft tapped for installing
a bolt on the C? I would heat the pulley in an oven at about 180 degrees, just enough to expand
it a fraction to slip on easily. Hal

Yes, the '48C crank is tapped with a 1/2" coarse thread. Waiting for UPS to deliver a puller to get the pilot bushing out before getting the crank ground. Always wanted one and will need it to get a bunch of the other oil seals and bushings removed as well.

Been cleaning and painting miscellaneous parts in the meantime. Rebuilt the magneto and generator. Working on the governor now. I need to post a picture of the governor innards sometime to ask a question. Putting the engine together will be the easy part. It's things like the axle seals, brake seals and tranny shaft oil seal and bearing that will probably give trouble. Haven't started to take them apart yet. The transmission shaft has about .05" play side-to-side and up and down, so the bearing is probably shot. The tranny is sitting all by itself looking very lonely!

Then there's that honey-dew list...
