Cub skips...I'm at a loss.

My '49 cub has magneto ignition. Rest of electrical is not yet hooked up(except starter). 3 times this season I have been running her pretty good(by today's hobby tractor standards, anyway). I shut her down to change implements or take a break, start her back up and she has a bad skip that won't go away. Let her sit about a day and she starts up and runs fine. What is it? A bad coil wouldn't cause just one cylinder to skip, would it? Cracked cap wouldn't show up just after shutting down, would it? Tried closing the choke a little to see if it was starving, but no effect. Valve job was done less than 20-25 hours ago, along with new rings, bearings, etc. Good oil pressure, not overheating...I'm just lost!!! Any help would be 'preciated. Thanks, Kevin

Hey Kevin, Where do you live? I could exchange a mag for ya to see if thats the prob. But I have been thinking to. And when things get hot cracks can exspand and then cool and compress or what ever you know what I mean. Are you looking at the valves for adjustment when there HOT??? JON

I'm gonna try a new cap, then if it does it, I'll try checking the valves hot, then I'll try another mag(I keep a spare mag for each of my tractors and engines). That should get me through the rest of the season, and I won't have to worry about it until next spring! Thanks, Kevin

Let me see if I can expalin this, when I was growing up our M would do the exact same thing.Dad usually didnt shut it down until he was done for the day,so the problem very rarely arose, but what it was was this, when the engine was shut down, the engine got hotter due to not having air flowing over the engine and throuigh the rad,the cap did have a crack and would be evident then, but as long as the air was flowing keeping the engine a little cooler the crack would stay closed, changed the cap and no more problem.Do I make sence?

Quite possible. I think I've got a couple of caps on the mag-parts shelf, I'll give that a try. Thanks.

My cub did this last year I changed everything then did a compression check and found out it was leaking between 2 cylinders (both had 98psi)

Can you tell what cyl is skipping? Have you tryed new plugs? Valves done right ? adjusted right? Do you have solid core wires? Now I have had mags that are weak and as you increase the rpms they seem to get hotter and fire better also. But Thats a few things I can think of. Remember just becuase a plug is new does not mean its good. JON

Changed plugs and wires(solid core)after the first time it did this...re-adjusted valves after 2nd time(still in spec)...It just bugs me that it only does this AFTER shutting down hot then restarting. Out of 3 times it did this, it has NEVER developed the skip WHILE running, only after a shut down. I have run the little bugger longer and harder with no problems, but have not shut down. I can usually isolate a problem either logically or accidentally, but this one has me stumped.

Try re-adjusting the valves. If it's been 20 - 25 hours a little fine tuning can't hurt. Also, add a few ounces of Marvel Mystery Oil to your gas tank. It sounds like a sticking valve or one that is set a little to tight.

I will retry the valves next time I get to go to the shop(might be swimming down there if Dennis gets his way). I have not gotten around to isolating the offending cylinder yet, either. Even on 3 cylinders, she still got me 5-1/2 rows of field peas in Saturday. I do love that little Cub!

Bigdog, the valves were my first thought also.

When it is running and "skipping" take a wooden tongs (salad) Or a spark plug wire pliers, they are insulated against 20,000 volts, and pull off #1 plug wire from the plug. If the skip does not change, that is the cyl. If it gets worse, it is not that cyl, put it back on and gor to the next. This will ID the bad cyl. (if it starts well, just pull the wire before starting) Check all plug wires for conduction 0 ohms for a solid wire, or less than 10,000 ohms for resistor wires.
An engine with a head gasket leak can have these symptoms. Use a radiator pressure check when cold to see if the pressure drops over a two hour period. Pull the plugs and spin the starter While standing and watching. -----Out of gear and with ign off----- Watch for water comming out of a plug hole. Bad gasket is indicated if a fountain erupts. Not a big job on this unit.
Jim Nicholson.
