The hydraulic system on my Farmall 350 started acting up. When the tractor is started, the hydraulic pump is dead heading the hydraulic oil. The motor pulls down. When I actuate a lever to the fast hitch or to a remote cylinder, the oil flows thru and engine unloads. As soon as the lever returns to center, the motor agains pulls down as the oil is "dead heading" I took the regulator valve apart and everthing looks good. Everything moves freely including the ball/seat. I put a new "o" ring on the plunger, cleaned out all the ports, re assembled and it still dead heads. I even took the power steering unit out of the hydraulic system to see if it was the problem. No luck. Any one have any ideas as to why the hydraulic system would "dead head" while not actually being used.???

When you disassembled thr regulator, did you check the safety valve orfice plug & screen ? It's under the piston, seat, ball & rider. After removing the above mentioned items, orfice plug will unscrew with a screwdriver. It has a screen on it and a very small hole in it also. Sometimes the screen in reservoir is rotted or torn which will let something pass through sustem and stop up orfice screen or like the last one I had this trouble with the orfice screen was completely missing allowing this tiny hole to stop up, causing exactly the symptoms you describe. If you've done this already then I'd definitely do as Aces suggests.

Thanks to all who responded. After reading the follow ups, I went out to the shop this morning and stared the tractor. Same problem. I looked at all 3 valve selectors and they all were fully engaged in the "DOUBLE ACTING" detents. I moved all three to the "single" detent and then back to the "double". Started the tractor and prblem was GONE. Cycled all levers several times and everything worked. Must have been something hung up in on of the valve selectors. Thanks again everyone. P.S. the orfice and screen that TDK talked about is located BETWEEN the 2 large bores in the regulator valve. The picture in the manual makes it appear to be under the spring and rider but it is actually next to it. I already had that part and cleaned the screen and made sure the orfice was open. Thanks for everyones help.

Hello,

Mine had that problem once....make sure all the "S" and "D" adjustment knobs are fully set on "S" or "D". Mine was slighly off, and it caused pressure to back up. ("S" single or "D" double acting selector knob for the hydraulics on the hydraulic blocks...pics in your ops manual) maybe this will help.....

Peter that is what in knowen as high pressuring. If you had the regulator valve apart then I would look to see if one of the remote valves as part way between single and double setting. The spool shaft comes out the end of the valve housing and has a roll pin through it and a clip on the valve cover for the roll pin to set behind as a stop see that pin is not broke and is not truned a little this will make the hyd high pressure.
