I have a SAV with a lot of gear noise and was wondering if going to a higher viscosity oil would help the situation. The tractor gets very little use normally limited to about 5 miles per year in road gear. It currently has 80 weight oil and I was thinking of trying 140 weight. Any thoughts?
Thanks

Bud: Since your tractor only holds 5 quarts, it's not an expensive change. I always put 6 quarts in there. Yes I would go with the 140 in your heat. You may find this doesn't help as there may be bearing wear. Check the final drives as well, about the only way to drain those is take the pans off the bottom, they hold 3 pints each and that is over and above transmission.

A good way to check for bearing wear and zero in exactly where it is is use a stethescope. Good way to check rear axles is jack and watch wheel and axle in relation to final drive housing.

Thought I should add that I live in Texas and the temperature is usually over 90F when I run my tractors.
