Some how this cub has been converted to 12V ignition, but the generator is still 6V. My parts book says this should have a 12V generator. Do I need to buy a new/rebuilt generator or is there another way to handle this?

Thanks for all the advice. I just ordered an Hitachi 14231 alternator and intend to replace the generator with that. Would like to go with electronic ignition, but it's not in the budget right now.
The only question left to answer is how the alternator connections on the Hitachi compare to the connections on a Delco 10-SI. Bob Melville has an good article on ytmag with directions for converting using the Delco. The Delco has connections marked Bat, 1 & 2. The Hitachi has connections marked Bat, S & L. If anyone knows which connections correspond (1 & 2 -vs- S & L) or where to find the info, would appreciate it.

That tractor came from the factory with a 12 volt generator. The part number might have been 1 100 401. My better literature is not here at the computer.

By a 12 volt ignition do you mean the coil? A 12 volt coil will run on a 6 volt system it may not be as efficient. Most 12 volt systems have a resister wire or block to lower the coil voltage to help the points last longer when the manufactures switched to 12 volt systems. I put a 12 volt coil on my Super C when the 6 volt quit and could not tell any differnce. If you are running a 12 volt battery it won't charge up fully with a 6 volt generator however I think IHC made some 12 volt generators that looked like 6. If you are worried take it in and have it tested.

The battery is 12V, the coil looks to be a 6V coil with a resister in line with it. The generator does charge some, but wont handle use of the lights. The parts book indicates the correct generator is a Delco 1100401 but have not been able to find one.

Is the battery a 12 volt? Pardon me for asking, but how do you know that the generator you have is a 6 volt?

Yes, the battery is 12V. I found the generator number in the IH parts book and it lists it as a 6V generator. It actually does charge the 12V battery, but not very well and if I use the headlights the battery will run completely down in a short time.

Unless you can pull a generator apart and rewind it, the only option is a new generator, or an alternator.
