I was thinking of converting my old 350 from gas to diesel for various reasons.
Do you think it would be worth the trouble and expense - or should I just buy another tractor.

350D engine- I have a 350D, fairly good engine for its time- now about 40+ years old, parts are $$ and a little slow to find when fixing. Not recomended as a conversion project. Other engine to switch into would be the 460 IHC engine- check archives for posting about install, 460 engine bolt pattern mounted to 300/350 transmission bell housing, frame rails from 460 installed, other front end parts from 460 also used. I remember this thread as a 460 with transmission casting broken for some reason and a 350 gas availble with bad engine, swap resulted in a usable tractor made from 2 non-usable donors.

Dave is right, you could probably buy yourself a couple of 560 or 656 diesels for less money than your current proposal.

It probably would cost more and be more trouble than it would be worth.

It would (in my opinion) ruin the collector value of the tractor to have some off-brand diesel engine in it.

If it was me, I'd rather sell the 350 and put the money toward the tractor you really want.

Unless you happen to have a 350d that is completly shot but has a good engine, just go buy one.

Thanks Guys...
I really don't want to sell her... I kinda thought I'd get the answers you gave.
If I did convert - it would have to be a diesel from a 350 - but then again, I'd be messing with a perfectly good tractor!!

Just a thought - THANKS!

Bad idea. in reply to Illinois Boy, 07-08-2005 09:05:27
The original diesel engine for that one was Continental, not IH. I don't know about its durability but parts are hard to find and very pricey. You could buy a whole heck of a lot of gas for the price difference.

The Continental engine used in the 350 were not very durable. They also had problems keeping the injection pump in time. Not a good idea.
