Well I broke down this weekend and talked the other half into a new Cub Cadet. I am getting sick of trying to mow 2 acres of hills with junk. So I get myself a brand new 1554 GT series 27hp Sound like a harley when shes running. lol Well I try it out on our burnt crisp grass and when I shut it down it backfires. So the next time I let her idle for about 30 secs and she still backfires. So I call the dealer that services them and he says I have to shut it down a full throttle. And it will never back fire again. Well I dont really get that one but the manual says to run it at full throttle at all times and shut down at 3/4 to full throttle. So why do they even have a throttle lever then ????? I guess they say that the oil pump and stuff gets the best pressure at that throttle. I will tell you one thing she takes the tall grass that I mow with the bush hog and says please sir give me some more.Shea a bear.Hopefully this one will outlast my 13 year old murry that I have been using. JON

Not sure what engine they are putting in those things now, but my '93 2182 has a three-cylinder, water-cooled, gas Kubota with a 60" deck (very quiet - the blades make more noise than the tractor!). It likes to backfire when shut off at high idle, but doesn't when throttled down first. The hydrostatic drive needs to have the engine run at full throttle. Takes about 10 hp just to run the hydro pump. The only thing I use the throttle lever for is to warm it up, then it gets set at full.

ps - I am going through an H4 magneto, general cleanup etc. Is there any way to tell if the coil is working as it should? Have heard folks talk about 'weak' coils, but that never made much sense. Can the magnets lose some of their stuff over time? Jeff

Yes they can get weak over time. Usally a condenser will be like the old briggs small engines they just go without warning. If you have a multi tester with a ohm meter you can test the coil. The little knob on top to either the wire that comes out or the aluminum tang that hooks with the screw into the coil core they should be the same and a good high output coil will put out about 12.7 I would discard for a new one myself under 10.7 some say down to 8 but thats getting pretty weak.If you want a professional reading you would need better equipment to test it with. This cub has a 27 hp kohler in it. JON
