Hay,

I have an A farmall and would like to know, should I use:

A: an antifreeze/water mix

or

B: just plain ole water from the hose?

Mine is a thermo siphon so which is better to use in this type system?

Thank You,

MACE

I didn't see anyone mention the more important reason for using engine coolant mix is for the rust inhibitors and lubricants.

I would use a 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze.
Mix thoroughly before filling system. This would protect your engine against any hard freezes during the winter. Drain and flush the system
every 3 years and install new antifreeze. One gallon of antifreeze will make 2 gallons when mixed 50/50 with water. Hal

Hey, Hal.
I use that same 50/50 mix in everything myself. I had always said that it was a PITA to have to mix it. "Why won't it come 50/50 already? I'd be happy to pay the same price just not to have to go to the bother."
Well, now it does. I see it at WallRip the last time I'm needing some. Ready mixed, $6 a gallon where the mix it yourself is $8. "What a ripoff. Save $2 a gallon just for adding a little water yourself."
Guess that shows me.

Just a note, please be careful buying anti-freeze at Wal-Ript. I bought some “full strength” from them and mixed it up 50/50. When I poured it out of the jug I thought it looked awful pale. I got my tester out and sure enough it was only good to about 0 degrees F. Then I tested the other new jug of “full strength” and it barely tested to -20 degrees F. This crap was already mixed to 50/50. I will buy no more anti-freeze from them EVER!

Hi Wm, They've had that mix out for awhile. I think there's some antifreeze out now that's suppose to be good for 5 years. Prestone has it now too. I bought a lot of antifreeze when they were offering rebates at different stores. I'm trying to reduce the number of my vehicles. The insurance is too much. The insurance companies have been hit so hard from hurricanes and other
weather related issues they are raising auto insurance to offset some of this cost. Hal

Actually it is costing you more than $2.00 per gallon more since they are selling you 1/2 gallon of water for $2 more. They are making out like a bandit. Then again some people pay $1 for a 20 oz. bottle of water! And we thought gas was high at over $2/gallon. Cheap compared to bottled water or anti-freeze and water. I recently looked on the label of one of those bottled waters and it said it came from the Kansas City municipal water supply. I'll pass.

If you need two gallons of mix in the tractor, the premix costs you $12, while the real stuff costs $8. For two gallons of mix, that is $2 per gallon.

I had to go to WalRip because Atwoods (our closest to Tractor Supply) only carries the premix.
