Hi, First time to this site. We recently purchased some farmland and scrambled to get machinery to bale all the hay. My husband bought a cutditioner, rake, and baler, all very cheap and had to repair every piece before we could bale. When we hooked our only tractor, a Ford 600, with a heavy bucket on it, to the cut-ditioner and tried it out, it quickly became apparent that the little 600 would not run the cut-ditioner thru heavy overgrown timothy. We bought a IH 806 Diesel and for one whole day, it ran like a charm, mowing hay. The next day, it up and quit on him. Yesterday it would start up, move about 5 feet and die back out. Also, if it has anything to do with it, the brakes would go out when he shut the tractor off. My husband can fix most anything, but he has no experience with diesels, and he is new to farming in general, (but learning fast!)
Thanks for any help you all can give.

Like the others have said check fuel flow out the bleeders on the fuel filtes if the flow is not a good flow then replace the filters and bleed till you get all the air out . If you don't have good flow then remove the fuel line from the filter that goes back to the tank and apply air pressure , just a short shot should do the trick . If this is noit the oporblem the remove the return line fitting off the top of the pump and try and start the tractor if it starts then clean it out but becareful not to damage the check ball that is in that fitting it is small and won't take any abuse. as for the brake the sump check plug is leaking and not holding hdy. fluid against the brake valve common problem .

It's fuel, there are so many places to check: #1 on the fuel filters there is a bleed valve on top, open one and see it you are getting a flow. #2 where the feed ling goes into the bottom ot the tank there is a screen in the tank, if this is pluffed, no fuel. take the feed line off, take the fuel filler cap off and blow air up into the tank. If i was there I could have it running in a few minutes but since i am not then git someone who knows IHC's to check it out!

Thank you all so much for your helpful suggestions. My husband read them. He did know why the tractors brakes didn't work, I didn't! When it initially stopped, it wouldn't start up and run again. Yesterday he replaced both? fuel filters (he said they were pretty gunked up), and then that's when it would run about 5 feet and quit again. He liked the idea of the basketball pump. We had one around here, but don't you know I couldn't find it for him before he left to go try to get it running again. (It's about 25 miles from home.) He said he should have dumped out the canisters that the filters sat down in. He hoped it didn't get into the fuel pump. I hope I am getting this all correct! I probably understand more than most women, but I am still pretty clueless about this stuff! Be patient with me!
I'll let you know how it all turns out.

Hi Rene'

I agree a fuel problem. Another item to check is the fuel shut off valve on the bottom of the fuel tank. Turn this "T" handle shut off valve back and forth a few times.

If that solves your problem, take the time to remove the shut off valve, fuel tank and clean both out really good. If not they will probably plug again very shortly.

Diesel's need clean fuel and air. That's 99% of keeping a diesel running in top shape.

Buy a orperator/repair manual for both tractors. Best $100 you'll ever spend.

My 806 did the same thing on a silage blower, got weak and died. It would light up and run a little bit and die. Lots of flow through the filters. It turned out to be the little glass check ball for the return line on top of the fuel pump, a RoosaMaster. I took the check valve off and it would run just fine. Replaced it and it was fixed. But be sure you have good fuel flowing through good filters FIRST, if you don't have Diesel experience the fuel pump is NOT a good place to experiment. Very durable tractor, get the bugs out and you will most likely become attatched to it. Bill

The brakes need hyd. pressure to operate and since the engine die's then the hyd's die as well just like the steering, hitch, remotes, and such. If there are any other Q's about the tractor just ask and somebody should be able to help you out.

Like mentioned already. Check fuel flow, maybe change filters. May also have water in the fuel.

The brakes are normal. When the engine dies no brakes. I forget why some one may chime in and explain it. That's the only thing I dis like about mine.

Make sure you're not low on fuel. Sounds like
it's not getting fuel to the engine. Hal

CHeck to see if he is getting a good stream of fuel to the injector pump. It could be as simple as a cloged fuel line or filter. I had a 966 that would do that every time the fuel got down to 1/4 tank. A piece of crap would float over and lay on the fuel outlet near the bottom of the tank. Got so I caried a basket ball pump to whooof the line back open. Good luck and I hope it isn't anything more serious.
