I was curious where is the cheapest place you guys go to find a 12 volt one wire altenator with an internal resistor? (NAPA, valu-blit, etc.) I am looking for something small enough that I can modify the generator bracket and I don"t want to cut my hood. Also what guage of wire would you all use.

Jesse, A Hitachi #14231 is the alternator to use. It is about an inch smaller in diameter then a Delco 10-SI and you need every bit of room you can get under the hood on the H which will be tight. I turned my existing generator bracket upside down which allowed me to retain the existing generator belt with my alternator. The alternator cost right at $50 plus a $10 core charge. I got mine at O'Reilly's Auto Parts but they are available at NAPA and other auto parts stores as well. It is an alternator used on a 1978-1980 Nissan 620 or 720 pickup with a 2 liter engine. It is a 3 wire alternator with a built in regulator and was very easy to wire in using Bob Mehville's wiring diagrams here on this site. My alternator terminals were labeled "L" and "S". "L" is same as 1 in Bob's diagram and the "S" is the same as 2. You will need to install a washer between the pulley halves for the wider IH generator belt. It works very well and starts charging when the engine is started. I also used a Radio Shack 10 watt/10 ohm resistor in place of the light shown in Bob's diagrams as I had trouble locating the noted light and holder. You will have enough room to adjust the belt tension a little bit since turning the generator bracket upside down moves the alternator upwards about an inch which takes out most of the slack. Good luck and it should go fine. Send an email if you require additional information.

I think someone that posts on here has used an alternator from NAPA that was used on a Nissan truck. The cost was around $49.95. You could take a look at one at NAPA to see if it will fit under your hood without having to cut away a portion of the hood. Hal

The classic alternator for this job is the Delco-Remy 10SI but folks have varying luck squeezing it under the hood. I've a '47 H that has one under the hood but it's a pretty tight fit. Search the archives. I've seen posts from folks who've used other smaller alternators and been very happy with the results. Once you decide on a model, search the web - maybe www.froogle.com. I bet your best price can be gotten through a web order, if you can wait for the shipping. Just to offer an opinion from one who's been there, I'd go with the three-wire setup, if you can. The alternator starts charging sooner at lower RPMs and it's not that much more wiring. I was much happier with the setup when I changed from one-wire to three-wire.
