I have checked the timing on my F12 & the points do not open until after TDC & it still kicks back sometimes. It seems to do it when it's possibly flooded. Should I keep retarding the timing until it stops?
Thanks, Kevin

Kevin -

Pull the wires from all your spark plugs.

Pull the spark plug from #1 cylinder. Slowly crank the engine till the pistion is on its way up in its compression stroke. Insert a 1/8" dowel long enough to reach the piston and extend well outside the hole. Set your mag handle (casting on the end of the mag) all the way up (off) then down about 1/4 or 3/8". Should be full retard. Slowly crank the engine, watching the dowel dowel for its indicator that you've reached TDC. Mag should impluse at the very top of the stroke or slightly past. Impulse tripping before TDC at this setting will create your kick-back.

Good luck !

When you set the timing, did you set it with the advance in full retart or full advance?

Do you have the original IH mag on it? If so, the lever up by the gearshift should be retarded fully when starting it. Once running, you can advance it as much as you want. Do you hear the impulse coupling tripping when you crank it? If not that could be the cause as well. The impulse coupling is designed to retard the spark too.

Yes, definitely, unless you are in the market for a broken arm or a complete set of dentures. I set mine at the halfway point and it starts with ease. Though in truth that only came about after a magneto rebuild. It solved many problems and while it was perhaps the item I agonized the most turning over to the big boys, it was in fact some of the most rewarding and worthwhile money I spent on my entire tractor project.

I just had my mag rebuilt also. The impulse seems to be working & I do retard it as much as I can with the lever.
Thanks, Kevin
