Is this doing damage to my 404

I have a International 404 that I have been using to pull an 8ft pull type cutter. It works good but I run it in first gear. I only cut about three acres with it but it is heavy grass. The tractor doesn't seem strained but I don't want to damage the tractor. Is this too much mower for the tractor? I think it is about 35 to 37 hp tractor.

I used to mow a LOT with a 6 ft Brillion rotary cutter behind My Super H.... I could cut anything I could drive over in 3rd gear.... If Your engine in Your 404 will still accelerate if You back off on the throttle some You are not over-loading Your tractor. Just watch the engine temp and oil pressure gauges and make sure they stay in the NORMAL ranges.

Dr. EVIL, the temp guage stays well within the normal range. The tractor only has an idiot light for the oil preasure. I am a lot more confortable using this tractor from all the replies. This is a great site for information. Thanks for your input. Jerry

I would like to put that 404 engine in my little Farmall B. Would make a great puller!

How heavy of grass are we talking? I run a 6-foot with a 240, which is the previous model to the 404, little smaller engine. I"ve gone all day in stuff that was about three feet tall, cleaning up some property for a neighbor. Like CNKS said, you need to figure out how many RPM"s the engine is turning with throttle wide open and the mower operating in the heavy stuff. Rated speed on a 404 is 2000 RPM"s, I belive, which will be fine all day. 80% of rated speed is overload, which is fine through a tough spot, but not all day.

Heck Jer,

I would think if it pulls it, it pulls it. Mine is a 7 footer and I really think that the H could handle it.

The inertia of all that weight really helps with all that iron spinnin' so fast and all.

Dunno, I just don't think you have to worry.

Allan

thanks Allen. The 404 pulls it fine in first gear which is fast enough for me since I only have about three acres to cut. I didn't want to throw a rod or anything like that from too much strain (even though it dosn't seem to be in a strain)

8 feet is quite a bit for a 404. Your tractor should have a tach. A rule of thumb for any operation, pto related or not, is that the engine rpm, loaded at full throttle, should not drop below the pto speed marked on the tach. Or, the engine rpm should not drop below the rated full load rpm -- I don't have that number handy. Another test is to depress the clutch to stop movement, then release the clutch -- the rpm should rise to the rated rpm in about 5 seconds, or less. Any more than that and the engine will probably be straining to make rpm. If it doesn't pass the test, reduce your swath width.

thanks CNKS, however the tach has been removed from the tractor. I'll check the second method and see how fast the mower comes up to speed. My recollection is that it seems to pick up pretty fast.
