How can I tell if the motor in my M was the original motor or not??? And if it's not the original is there a way to determine what it came out of???

The reason I'm asking is a buddy of mine has a farmall 400 that he said has a farmall M motor in it. I've also heard of farmall M's with farmall 400 motors. So I'm curious to know before I start working on rebuilding my M's engine what I have.

thanks,
Mark

The casting codes in the form of 1*8*T (month*day*year) should match on within a few months of each other on all the castings on your tractor. I was 1939, then the letters were consecutive through Z in 1954, when they satrted over with A, EXCEPT that V was not used, and both U and W were used in 1951.

Also, the original M engine will not have a cubic inch designation on the rightside of the block. The M was a C248 (not cast), Super M/MTA/400 C-264; 450 C-281. D prefix if diesel.
