Found out that my 400 could not handle my NH 850.
Got about 15 bales of oats hay done then the rear PTO unit fried. I think I burned her up pretty good too. Sounds like the planitary and the bands went. Smoke coming out of the vent tube. Looks like I am in the market for a rear PTO unit if you got one.

You can put in a newer PTO unit. The later 560's had a unit that snapped in and out rather than the lock in and out with the thumb button. I assume it might be a better PTO. Actually I think a good functioning unit even like the one on your 400 should carry all of the horses you have to the baler. Maybe it was wearing down. If you make a swap make sure it will give you 540 rpm at your rated speed. There are differences between diesels and gases I do believe.

Couldn't you just rebuild the one you have with new clutches and bands?

I think the planitary went also. Grinding her pretty good. Funny heard nothing with the baler running. At least until I smelt the burning oil.

Should be able to find a replacement one easily. Chances were that the one that went was not in the best of shape or adjustment. It was not because of the baler. Just poor timing now it went when you have hay to do. Larson have one?

Mornin' Kelly,

Ouch! I feel bad about your losing your PTO too. That had to have ruined your day!

Just out of curiosity, you're not disengaging that PTO every time you dump a bale are you? If so, you don't have to. The baler will shut the chain off as the door opens.

I'd think that if you are turning the PTO on and off all day long, it would put quite a bit of wear on your PTO clutch.

No I did not. Bale wont come out unless its running.
My chains kept running when open..... ?
Pretty much @ss out till I get her fixed. Picked a bad time to sell my 460... :-/

I still dont know what I am going to do even after I get the 400 fixed. That 850 is way to much grunt for her.
Hmmm $5000 for a bigger tractor or $3000 for a smaller baler. Wifes gona blow a Valve stem ether way.
