SMTA Carb Rebuild

Starting in on the newest addition to the family. The SMTA carb was leaking profusely. When I pulled the air intake hose, about a cup of gas poured out. So I pulled the fuel line, strainer, and carb. Strainer had what looked like a melted tootsie roll in the bottom. Carb is total goo. I have rebuilt a lot of carbs, but this one does not appear a candidate for "amateur" fix. Needs an internal cleaning that only the pros can do. Who would you guys recommend? And what is a fair price? One advertiser in RED POWER, gets $150, and then toss in 2 way ship for another 20.00.

Those carbs are relatively simple, if you really prefer not doing it yourself send me an e-mail. Personally I think $150 is a bit steep.

I just had tredline carb in NY rebuild one for my allis G, let just say my attempt was an honest effort. They rebuilt it then put it on a test engine and ran it up. When I put in on my machine I didn't have to adjust anything. Well worth $125. I plan to send a Farmall M carb this winter.

Do you have a phone number for tredline or an email address? Hal

If you can get the carb disassembled, soak it in carb cleaner, or paint thinner for a few days to loosen all the gunk. blow the passages clearwith air. You should be able to blow air into a passage, and fell where it will exit from to know if its unplugged, if not, keep soaking, and blowing it out with air. You should have seen the last carb I rebuilt and got working!! I think it was under water for about 10 years!!! Never seen one that bad. But, it did finally clean up, and run like a new one. Hope this helps, Chad

I've had very good luck using a bucket of Carb cleaner solution from my local auto parts store. It came with a removable strainer basket to lay all of the small parts in so they can be submerged in the solution. As guckie as your carb sounds, you may have to leave the disassembled carb in the solution for a longer time than what you would normally. Use compressed air to clean out all the passages in the body of the carb after soaking. Then install a new kit in the carb as you reassemble the unit. The kit is re-usable as well, just keep the lid on tight to prevent evaporation.
