SC Clutch problems - Continued:

I am convinced that I need to split the tractor and replace the clutch pilot bushing in the flywheel, the clutch and possibly the pressure plate, and the clutch release bearing. I also will replace the clutch release shaft bushing and the bushing the clutch pedal pivots in, if it fact it rides in a bushing.

I have a Parts Manual, an Engine Service Manual and an Operators Manual.

Is there a Shop Manual that gives the blow-by-blow process to R and R the engine, clutch, and other non-engine assemblies in the SC?

skycarp,

Learn from my mistake: when putting the tractor back together, the engine side should slide on the shaft splines nice and easy...if you've got it lined up and supported correctly, you should be able to slide the two pieces together without having to use the bolts to snug 'em up. If you have to put a lot of pressure on any of those main bolts (other than the final torquing), the clutch disk isn't aligned on the splines.

(Put enough force on those bolts when the disk isn't aligned with the shaft's splines, and you can bend the clutch disk. Put even more force on one side, and you could break the cast flange on the engine block. Don't ask how I know...)

Feel free to email with other questions if you like -- I've split my C three times now...once the wrong way, and twice since the right way. At least I learn ;-).

You will need a clutch alignment tool so your splined shaft will slide easily into the clutch disc. Be careful when splitting and during reassembly. Hal

The IT manual gives a "terse" but good play-by-play on splitting & replacing the clutch. It's not a major operation as long as you have or improvise the right equipment. I used a movable engine lift to support the engine and a rolling drum rack & blocking to support the rear. Unbolted, rolled rear end straight back, replaced flywheel ring gear, replaced clutch, pilot & throwout bearing,& put the two ends back together. The whole process took two of us less than two hours. Good luck!
