Hugh McKay and his lovely wife Marg were discovered wandering around in Western NY this past Friday. So we bought 'em lunch, swapped a few lies then sent them on their way back toward Canada.

(We thoroughly enjoyed your visit Hugh! ...Bob)

David: My next invasion of the USA will be MI, WI, IA, IL and IN. Wanting to do that one in the height of fall colors. You, Dave in MI, Paul in MI, Paul Backus, geneb, etc. will have to keep me advised when that will hit. Plan to see that loop around Lake Michigan, and as many of you folks as possible.

Are you sure that is the REAL Hugh MacKay? The one who cruises Michigan drives either a Buick or a truck-load of cabbages. Did you check ID? He didn't sound Nigerian did he? I would advise caution.

Dave: Careful, there is a guy up the road trying to sell me a Burgendy Cadillac, with tinted glass. May be a good one to drive in MI.

I was on a tractor parts buying expidition when Bob caught up with me. Just never know when one may buy too much for the Buick to haul. Got to be prepared.

I must say we did have an excellent journey while in upstate NY. Went south west along Lake Erie to Dunkirk, then south on 60 to 86. Took 86 through the Allegany Mountains to 390 and north to Rochester. Fantastic scenery.

There is almost nothing a Buick can't haul. Pulled a JD baler 30 miles behind one once. Of course I was young and stupid then. I'm older now. That upstate NY trip is one I would like to do sometime. Haven't found an excuse yet. When you come to Michigan, remember our custom of bringing a gift. An A or B Farmall would be just about right.

Bob: Let me assure you the enjoyment of the meeting was mutual. I must admit I was a bit intimidated by Glenda and Marg. You and I have corresponded many times through discussion here at YT and through personal e mail. Here were these two ladies, whom had never met, carrying on conversation as though they had known each other since childhood.

I've always said, you meet some of the finest guys around this old iron hobby. Just goes to show, the ladies who tolerate them daily are just as genuine.

In my 5 years taking part in YT discussions, I have experienced just about it all. I find myself wanting to take this to a new level. I now want to meet the people behind the discussion. I have done this in several cases. To all people here in the YT discussion community, I encourage you to get out and meet a few of these folks. Let me assure you they are the finest kind of people.

Hi Hugh, You're right about these people posting
on here being some of the finest.

I had a man from WI that posts on here
and I think he uses Butch from WI to send me an email saying he and his wife and his cousin and his wife were coming to MD to visit his brother. His brother is a tech rep for Oshkosh
Truck Co. and the trucks are being tested at Aberdeen Proving Ground. Butch wanted to meet up
while he was here. I told him that I retired from APG.

I told him to to stop by and visit and on the Sunday before Memorial day he arrived with about 7 or 8 people. Its been a long time since we had that many people here in the living room. Butch said they're milking 1300 cows 3 times a day. They use 2 milking parlors and milk 20 cows every 7 minutes. I hope I remembered all that correctly. My late dad would be impressed by all those cows and how times have changed.

Looks like you're pretty skinny from the photograph posted by Bob of you and your wife.
Don't overdo it. Hal

Hal: Yes, I've dropped 32 lbs. since April 1st. Bob's photo just re-enforced Marg's argument, time for me to go shopping for clothes. Of course me being a Scotish descendant, I augue since I'm aiming for 200 lbs., pointless to waste money.

Jimmy: Got to save you folks for when it gets cold here in Canada. If oil keeps going, it will soon be less expensive to go south than stay here in winter.

Twenty years ago Marg. had an aunt and uncle, had lived and raised a family in Syracuse, NY. They spent summers in PEI and winters in Florida. Every spring and fall they called on their children in NY. Now thats what I call retirement.

I always wondered what the famous Hugh Mckay looked like. Didn't think he would have such nice legs.

Paul: You have a vivid imagination, using words like famous and nice legs. It's just an old carcass off the farm, that I've managed to keep free of stiches and broken bones for close to 63 years. The wrinkles and lack of a good crop of hair is another matter.

Discovered wandering around. . .haha. Is he wearing an Oliver hat? There's something about that other shade of green.

Nositri: Yes the hat is an Oliver hat, and there is a story behind that, but first let me tell you my view on tractors.

I farmed for a living in my younger days. The 7 or 8 mainline companies putting out tractors in the 60s & 70s all had decent products. I have yet to see what I consider to be the perfect tractor. All new tractors back then had at least one feature I liked. Deere should be coming closer to the perfect tractor than anyone, as they never had any first ideas of their own, just did a great job of picking up and marketing other companies ideas, like Oliver's 6 cylinder, Cockshutt's IPTO, Ferguson's 3 point, IH's TA. etc. I farmed with in my lifetime 16 Farmalls, 1 Deere, 2 Case and 1 M-F. The dealer behind the tractor is what makes them great to the commercial farmer.

Now for the story, behind the hat. I have a friend who farmed with Farmalls in the same era as I did, still has his Super M and Super A. Today his sons farm with 5 Deeres. The boys were always giving me a hard time about coming in their shop wearing my Farmall or IH hat. This place was for green hats only. I decided to comply with their wishes and get a green hat. One item I do notice, the mesh on back of the Oliver hat keeps the sun's rays off my bald head much better than my Farmall or IH hat.

When Bob caught up with us for the photo, I wanted to go to my suitcase for my Farmall hat. He wouldn't hear of it. I can tell you this, I am going to own an Oliver before I croak.

That looks like an Oliver hat to me also, but I could be wrong. Myself, I like Farmalls, Olivers, and Ford trucks to!
