After several replies to my note a few days ago, looked up a brake speciality shop in the area and made a call. Said they had what I needed in stock. Headed over this afternoon and for $39, recieved a strip of woven brake type material designed to be in oil, and a hand full of rivets. After a few minutes on the lathe to turn out a rivet forming punch, Calvin & I took about a half hour to drill, countersink, and drive the 38 rivets on the band.

After dinner, we proceeded to thread the band back onto to the bull gear (with the aid of a pull wire) and reassembled things to where we think they should be. Reassembled the lid to the transmission housing and added new oil.

Brake seems to operate by hand fine, but it'll be a few days before we get to try it, as it's getting ready for a 50' cosmetic restoration (looks great at 50'). Should have an update in about a week or so.

Turned out not to be too bad of a project. Just all the unknowns were the challenge. Will be more than happy to walk anyone else thru this project. E-mail me at: peter.w.labelle@jci.com

Stay tuned.....

I replaced mine a while back also, what a job. It's kind of like pulling the fenders off a truck just to replace the sparkplugs.
