H Generator not charging

Battery doesn't seen to be charing on my H(6 volt), how do I test the generator to if its charging.
Amp meter shows no charge but not discharging.

the way i test gen is unhook it and then take jumpers and touch the ground on gen and the other jumper wire on field term, if it is good it will spin like a starter does.

Do you have a VOM (volt, ohm meter)? If so check the voltage across the two battery terminals with the engine running. On a 6 volt system, there should be 7 and1/2 volts or so. Compare with the reading when the engine is not running (just over 6 volts with a fully charged battery). It could be the regulator too. Check the voltage from ground to the armiture (i think) terminal on the generator or the regulator.
If you don't have a meter, you can probably tell if it's charging by seeing if the lights get brighter when you increase the engine RPM.
just some thoughts.

Thanks for the advice I'll give it a go. I just put a new voltage reg on a few months ago so I doubt its that. And tractor doesnt have lights either but going to put them on soon.
