Ignition Exhaust Advice 43 H

My 43 H came with a 12volt batt, which explains why the coil (and points, condensor) is probably burned out, and by the way thanks everyone for helping determine that.

Now the question is, before I go out a buy parts should I buy a 12volt coil (with a resistor ?) and if so do I need a ballast, or is that what they mean by a coil with a resistor. OR should I just by a new 6 volt Batt and return the components to original.

Can anyone tell me what the part name (&part number) of that piece that is between the exhaust manifold and the muffler, or is this part of the muffler. Bolts to the ex manifold with 2 bolts (seized) and is rectangular in shape and is Broken… needing to purchase a muffler (Still waiting for my (3) manuals)

As far as 6 or 12 volt depends on what you want to do. If your goal is to retain originality, then 6-volt is the way to go. I have found 12-volt systems to be more forgiving than 6-volts for needing starting circuits in perfect condition.

If you want to add a radio, additional lights or other electrical accessories I believe you will find 12 volts will be more practical. If you stay with 12-volts you will need either a 12 volt coil or a 6-volt coil and a ballast resistor wired in the power line between the switch and the coil. When I do my conversions to 12 volts I always find a way to wire them for 12 volt start/6-volt run. I do this by running a wire from the coil side of the resistor to either a 12-volt tap on switch on the starter (I buy a special switch for the rod pulls like on a C) or from the starter side of the push down switch on the M, or from the 12-volt tap when I do a remote solenoid instead of the push down switch on the M. I have found this to make for a much easier cold weather start.

According to my parts CD it is just called Pipe, exhaust (Distallate or Kerosene). The part number is 6713D. If you need a printout of the manifold and parts list let me know. I can e-mail them to you. All you need is Adobe Reader. My e-mail is uncovered. I get off work at 3:00 CDT and probably won't be back on this board or into e-mail until next Wednesday. Taking a long holiday weekend and have plans that are more exciting than sittin on my computer.

If you are converted to 12v then you either need the ballast resistor or a coil with a built in resistor. Bob M or others will jump in here if I am wrong on this part.

Chris – My recommendation is to buy a new 6 volt coil and battery and return the electrical system to original. So long as the electrical system is in good shape (especially the battery cables), your H will start reliably on 6 volts.

From your description it sounds like your H is equipped with a distillate manifold. The busted piece is called the “exhaust pipe” (part #6 713 D) – it will be difficult to find a replacement.

The easiest solution is to replace the entire manifold assembly with a gasoline manifold (uses a standard 2” threaded pipe nipple for the exhaust pipe which can be replaced in the unlikely event it rusts thru or gets bent).

Figure on spending $120 or so for a new aftermarket gas manifold. Or you might find a good used one at a boneyard. But you will now have a solid muffler mount, and it will give the engine a bit more power as well.

Go and buy a 12 volt coil with internal resistor, you won't need anything else.
It sounds like your tractor still has the original hot manifold for the kerosene or distillate fuels. I think the part you need is available somewhere, can't think of exactly where right now. Your other option is to replace the entire manifold with the later cold manifold.

If you want a good basic 12 Volt coil that needs no resistor, NAPA #IC-14SB is one choice.
