In particular for the water pump shaft, quantities of grease are listed in strokes with 'pressure gun grease'. I haven't found any reference elsewhere in the Operator's Manual describing the grease gun. What size grease gun are they talking about?

Get a pistol grip grease gun and the full sized ones cost less per tube.

I have what I guess would be called a 'mini' grease gun. You wrap your fingers around the barrel and squeeze the pump lever with your palm, holding it like a pistol. The cartridge is about 1.25" round by 6" or 7" long. I would imagine the kind they are referring to in the operator's manual is closer to the lever-action size that takes a cartridge about the size of what a small caulk gun takes (not the forearm-size contractors use). Can folks confirm this is what they use? I've been doubling up my shots with the small gun but will just use the larger gun if I get a confirmation.

You'll save a lot of money buying a regular grease gun. The little cartridges cost much more per ounce.

Size doesn't matter. Zerk fittings have been industry standard for decades, and that's what your tractor has. Any grease gun will work.

I think his question has more to do with whether two shots from one of the mini grease guns would put enough grease in.

Just go to an auto parts store or farm supply and buy a full size lever action grease gun.

The amount of grease is not really very critical.

Andy, when greasing the water pump the amount IS critical, too much grease will blow out the seal.

Certainly, but I don't think there is a grease gun available that will give it too much with two shots. He may have been concerned that a mini grease gun might not give it enough. Not quite enough is really a big deal. Lots of M's run lots of years for owners who don't know you can grease the water pump, mag/distributor drive, and the pilot bearing.

I used to have an air-powered Lincoln grease gun and it gave the same size shot as a standard hand gun. I think the mini guns give less grease.

Probably the little push gun that came with the tractor.

Its probably hanging somewhere in a shed on the original owner's place. They did not hold much grease & they were a pain in the @** to fill, so weren't used very much. (Wish I had the two that we left hanging in that old shed on Dad's place when he moved to town.) The "lever actions" were the most commonly used as they were much easier to fill before the advent of the "cartrage" guns that everyone uses today. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)
