How many seals should be on each brake shaft for farmall H. I took two out, but when I called the local Case IH dealer I got the empression that there should only be one.
Does anyone know what the manuals say on this?
How many have you installed?
Also do they install lip pointing in or pointing out?

The lip or spring side of a seal always goes toward the oil supply that you do not want leaking out.
I have always put 2 seals in on my H & M tractors. Be sure ALL of the old seal housing is removed.
Use a flat file to remove any sharp edges from the brake drum, put a small amount of gun grease in between the seals, grease the sealing surface on the drum and install.

Originally there was one seal used, but some time ago the design of the seal was changed and now two fit (seals were made thinner).

On my M I have two on the right side and one on the left side. On the left side when I pulled the original single rotten seal out I could only get one seal back in, it was just so tight and I was afraid forcing the first one all the way in would ruin the outside seal (green part). I think the hole was cut a little small on my tractor... or I guess the seal could have been a little big, one or the other..., but I just tapped one seal in flush on the left side and called it good.

Niether side leaks so I'd say one works, but two would work better. With 2 if one seal goes bad it still doesn't leak because the other seal keeps it from leaking.

hope this helps!

scruffy
