this coil is marked "12R" Does that mean that it is used 12 with resitor or does it have an internal resistor?

From the shape I'd say it is IH for sure (you probably know that). It is black and shows no red so I'd also say it is not off of a letter series, nor a early number series. Check with the parts department to see if there were resistors on later model tractors. Some equipment, Ford cars for instance, use a resistor wire that goes from the switch to the coil. And a bypass wire from the solenoid to give the coil full volts with the starter in the circuit. If the coil has the same Ohms of resistance as a six volt coil (or within an ohm of it) it is a 12 v with resistor required. If the resistance is almost twice the Ohms of a six volt, it is probably a "non-resistor" type. I gave no Ohm specs because ohm meters don"t always talk alike at low ohms unless they are too expensive.
Good luck, Jim Nicholson
