Hey all:

Brake replacement on the W-30 is underway as of today. Son Calvin removed the fenders & trimmings on his own for about 4 hours to get to the rear end lid (tis helpful having a tractor nut son with nothing to do during summer vacation).

Removed the bolts to hold on the lid, then discovered 2 threaded pins, bout mid way on each side. These are actually dowel pins that, with help of a nut and/or vice grips, needed to be backed out. Only pressed into the lid/housing. Exposed threads are all there are.

Once out, the lid needed to be lifted a quarter inch and slid backwards about 2-3 inches to disengage the rear PTO shaft. PTO power comes from a "gear" in the front of the final drive housing. The PTO shaft has a female gear that mates with that gear. Time for the lid - approximately 1 hour.

Band brake required to remove the bolt that clamps one end of the band to the operating shaft. The outside of the housing sports a bracket that the hand brake pivots in. Remove the bolts then slootched outward to allow the band to become free.

Tied a string on to the the forward end of the freed band (to allow reverse retrieval if necessary), needed to move one of the shift linkages forward to allow clearnace, then carefully pulled the band free of the tractor by pulling on the rear end of the band.

Band has what appeared to be a cotton webbing riveted to it. Only about 10% of the original banding remained (which explained the near non-existant braking capability).

Any thoughts on an oil resistant material to use instead of the cotton webbing?

Keep you fellow W-30 owners posted with my brake project, as it appears I'm in uncharted territory for many of us.

Try a local "Clutch & Brake" specialist. I have fould that they can resurface almost anything such as brake shoes and brake bands.
Also, do not mention that the material might be asbestos or they will want additional $ to dispose of it.
PS: Thanks for the report. I hope to tackle the same project later this summer on my W-30.

The brake lining is asbestos I think. You should be able to buy it yet. I'd try Rice first. I suppose antique car places would have it too. Not sure if I have any that wide.

dont have a pto on mine, not many do. makes yours a little more unussual. as for brake material, have you tried rice equipment?[1-814-226-9200], they have older f series parts. or maybe a napa or auto store for a piece of[brake pad], material that will work? mine was like brand new when i took off the transmission cover. pg

Regarding a rare PTO, I don't think so. I think many of the tractors had the PTO within the housing, but no spline exposed. There's a blank cover with 4 bolts at the most rear of the housing. Removing this cover exposes a coarse threaded shaft about 1 1/2" diameter. Ball bearing is also exposed. Me thinks that if you wanted a PTO, that a short housing with a seal was bolted in place of the cover, and a short stub with the mating female thread on one end and spline on the other made up the PTO kit. Currently, the shaft, which is about 2' long, does absolutely nothing within the tractor and probably could be removed. My observations....

The bands used on "M" band brakes are not deteriorated by oil (they often become saturated from bad seals on the shafts) and, though no good soaked in oil on the "M" I bet the material would work fine inside yours.
Another thought, Heavy equipment repair shops should be able to reline it with friction material used on cable spool brakes used on cranes!! Good Luck
