Picked up a B with a belly mower that had not been run much over the last few years that is starting hard and lopes quite a bit before she settles down. Appears low on power, no snap.

Did the following so far

1. New plugs autolite 386 2. Compression 90 lbs on all 4 cyl 3. plugs pretty black after only a few minutes running 4.Carb cleaned and new kit installed, cant be 100 percent sure everything ok here 5. Rotor and cap look good, did not get into internal of mag yet , spark appears weak to me

6. Suspecting something might be haywire with the governor.

Appeciate any advice you guys may have to make this old girl run better so I can cut some grass.

Most carb rebulds are a waste of time, it's usually bad spark. All the symptoms you describe suggest poor point contacts. simple job....10 minutes tops.

Take Care

1. Ok
2. Compression is OK, could be better but should work
3. Black plugs could be oil or excess fuel. Does it use oil? If not then the carburetor needs adjusting or the air cleaner needs servicing.
4. Start with mixture screws backed out 1.5 turns from fully in. Then adjust in or out for best performance
5. Spark should jump ½ inch and be blue and crisp. If it is reddish or feathery it is getting weak.
6. Check the pivot pins on the linkage to the carburetor and make sure that the linkage works freely. If it binds, this will cause surging. You could also have weak springs in the governor, but I’d make sure the linkage is working free first.

Good luck

Black plugs say to me that the carb is set to rich, and they are getting flooded a little. But weak spark can also do that. The spark should be blue in color if its yellow you have some problems in the mag.

I just wish I had 90 lbs. of cylinder pressure. My B has 75 lbs. Runs fine though. Must have pop up pistons.
