Anyone know how much work is involved in replacing the rear axel seals? Do you just take the flange bolts out and remove the axel & flange assembly as a unit? Or is there something you have to do on the back side, under the plate to get the axel and hub out?

Also, how do you remove the front crank pully?

Thanks,

scott#2

Whoa there Scott! You can break that front pully if you are not careful. There is a set screw and it is behind the pully. Remove the set screw first and Place a bearing puller behind the pully and catch hold of the bearing puller with a three point puller. If you try using just a three point you can break your pully and they ain't cheap.
Good Luck.

Ya, I thought there had to be something to hold it on. Ill probably get to it later this week. Thanks for all the help Dixie, Toro, & Jerry.

These things really are built like a brick ____ house. After 50 years, during the tear down, I only had to torch 1 nut, a fender nut.

Thanks guys,

Still a little in the dark on the pully. Is it bolted on? I didnt see a bolt in there. If it isnt, what keeps it from coming off? Oh, I guess its not on a taper shaft, best to heat it up in a oil bath to get it back on???

You can heat it in your oven, its not so messy as an oil bath.
Cub uses a bolt, look carefully for a bolt on that damper pulley. They're tight on a Cub, a press fit. Hal

Make one yourself or have one like this made to fit your pulley. This was designed for a Cub
using a hydraulic jack. You can also use a hydraulic ram. Here's the website, Hal

You won't bend this puller, it will either come or bleed. It's like using a hydraulic press in reverse. Hal

I used a wheel puller. Tigheten it up a few wacks tighten some more a few wacks (on the bolt on the puller not the pulley). Some have had to use heat. And I did bend my cheap puller.

Pull it all the way down. Replace all the seals. I'm just a little a head of you. If your using electrolysis the drives can go in the tank then. And you will be able to check the bearings. 50 years they need to be checked. And the seals on the tranny at the axle should be replaced. All are still available from IH.

Yes, the seals are still available @ $16 each from my dealer. I just bought 4 of them last week. I thought that was a ridiculous price. Hold onto your wallet!! I copied down the CR and National numbers and want to check with a bearing and seal distributor sometime to see if I can get them any cheaper.

Try to buy parts for 50 yr old appliances and see how much it costs. Seals for tranny area cost me $100.00 but I wont need new in my lifetime. How bout the $20,000.00 yuppie machines, How much are their gaskets and seals and how long will they last?
