I've had a discussion going on the Oliver Board on this subject and there also has been talk on the John Deere board on it. Now I am wondering if someone could enlighten us on which was the first IHC tractor with a live PTO?

Oliver had the first in 1945 or 46.

bill: You are not completely correct, and not wrong either. From 1946 to 1962 Oliver and Cockshutt each produced their own tractor. They did however use the same IPTO unit. The Nebraska Test lab recognizes Cockshutt as the first tractor tested at Nebraska having IPTO. Rumours have always been that Oliver already had 300 model 88 tractors in the field with IPTO, however they never advertized that. If you do a bit of exploration, I think you will find Patent belonged to Cockshutt.

Live PTO vs Independent PTO ??? in reply to Dave Brennan, 06-28-2005 05:31:11
In 1954 the Farmall Super M-TA had a "Independent Power Take Off"

The first "Live Power Take Off" was the o6 Series.[I Think]

Unless you are lumping both types in the same catogory.

Both 06 and SMTA are considered live or independent PTO. Just that one is hydraulic actuated {06}and the other {SMTA}is manually actuated. The other type live or independent PTO would be a dual clutch PTO like the B 414 or 424 has.

Live and independent PTO are not the same. With independent PTO such as the SMTA and later Farmalls you can start and stop the PTO fully independent of the transmission clutch, and vise versa. Live PTO such as the B414 and other British based utilities and other brands with a pedal controlled double clutch differs in that you can start and stop ground travel without stopping the PTO. You can't however, stop and start the PTO without disengaging the transmission clutch.

Thanks for the replies fellows, seems like there's something new to learn every day even with 35 plus years of wrenchpulling and part time farming the family farm.
