Ive been getting ready to rebuild the brakes on my 53 Super H for a 5th time since Ive owned it. To describe what it is doing,, well, the left side kinda works, but takes 2 legs to make them work, the right, dont do anything. It has new disks, and Ive put new springs in on the actuator, and have sandblasted the actuators, only part that has not been replaced are the balls in between the actuators. It keeps glazing the disks, and dont grip like the should,,, Ive treid adjusting the pedal linkage, but it dont change, what am I missing? The brakes on my Super H have always acted up,, Ive rebuilt others, and they work like new,, but this one has got me stumped! Thanks for any response! ChadS

stand on the brakes and drive around, get them good and hot. Sometimes it helps to break the glaze so they will hold a little. How far do you have to push the pedal before it starts to take hold?

Usually, they say the 3rd time is the charm,, but, ya all know how that goes!! The left, I can push the pedal very hard, it moves probably 2 inches, and you just start to feel the brake take hold, you can stand on them harder, but dont do any good, the clampimg force dont seem to change much. the right side, it is very hard to push down, I have yet to ever push on it hard enough to make it activate. So something in there is not moving or?? I load and unload this tractor on and off the trailer quite a bit through the summer months, It makes me kinda leary to drive the tractor when loading, and hooking the chains, slipping the clutch to keep it in one spot, while trying to hold the brakes, one of these days, my foot will slip off one of the pedals, and something bad is gonna happen! Can the actuators, be switched side to side? Causing this problem? I was a kid when I tore into them the first time, Ive had this SH since I was 10 or 11, I cant remember,, LOL I know I was 16, or 17 when I first had them apart, maybe, at that time, I put em together wrong,,, Its been 4 or 5 years since the last time Ive had them apart, Not very fun when you cant stop it!! well you can slow it down,,,, but thats bout it,,, Chad

Take the outside brake housing lay it down and place new brake shoes or measure new shoe thickness and use that figure along with actuator
inside brake housing.Place flat edge across housing and check clearance between housing and
shoe.Measure brake back plate and check where the
shoes hit,is it raised or concaved compared to surface that brake housing bolts to,add or subtract from previous measurement. If clearance
is excessive machine inside edge of brake housing. Also Machine any parts that need trued up before measuring. Also check splines for excessive
wear and make sure actuator linkage is not hitting inside brake housing.Hope this is understandable.

Yep, splines are good, Ill check to see if the linkage is hitting the brake housing,,, kinda seems like that may be whats up on the right. Im also wondering, about the spring tension on the linkage, could the springs go weak, and create too much adjustment, and hit the housing? Other than a donor, can the springs still be bought? I second that thought...Dad sold 'em new, and he always said that the main purpose of IH disc brakes was to make sure farmers had the opportunity to build some new fence! His usual advice was to swap 'em back to bands, though I can't recall ever seeing him do this on one.

It doesn't take too many times of coming up to a fencerow, clobbering the brake to turn, and watching the tractor plow straight ahead because the brakes don't work worth a sh... uh, dern, to make ya hate 'em...sometimes just ONCE is too much.

Yeah, I can remember being on that Super H for days on end, plowing with a 2 bottom IH pull type plow. Till Dad bought the 856, we used a 730 deere, and that Super H. I know the band brakes conversion can be done, but, you gotta change the bearing cages on the brake pinion shafts, and, I think you may either have to drill the pilot hole for the band brake pivot pin to go into the rear end housing, or, there may be a plug there,, Dont know for sure,,,, How is the IH trucks you got, running? Good I hope, seems like a good time to go driving in the country in one. I know where there is an old IH truck sitting, and its not bad at all! It has a wood stake bed on it, dually, tires are up, but probably wouldnt last 200 miles,,, LOL! But, engine is not stuck,, All I know for the model, Im thinking of S-180,,, I could be wrong, but "S" for sure. It is a straight valve head engine, the tag is inside the cab, drivers side, by the door. Couple hours of work, and paint, mite be nice! Has a single barrel Holley carb, if that helps determine a year make. is $200 too much for the whole truck? Chad

After you make sure that you don't have any bind and that the surfaces are ok.You will need to know the thickness of a new disk.take 4 old disks with good splines down to a brake& cluth reliner shop, and have CLUTCH lining material installed on those disks. Make sure they are the right thickness. that is important. This will work I have them on a super M, Super MTA, a 560, & a200 they all work well just like power brakes.
