Can the needles from an International model 27 baler be used on a 46? Do they still make needles for model 46 balers? One of them on our baler broke today, and there is a junk model 27 baler with needles that appear to be intact.

Hi William, years ago when we had a 46 and broke a needle we had it welded and it lasted for many years. It was broken about 8" down from the top end.

BTW is your spring on your plunger stop dog broken? The only time we ever broke a needle is when that spring broke. The spring is located under the bale chamber by the wheel.

The needle bent (actually, it got so it was a little less bent than it should be) when my father adjusted it too high and it hit something near the knotter. It broke when he tried to bend it back.

Hi William, one time my Dad was baling with the 46 and the knotter side wheel dropped in a wood chuck hole just as a bale was being tied, broke shear bolt for needles, spring on stop block was broken, plunger hit the needles, broke one and bent the other. Had one welded and straightend the other by heating with oxy-acetalyne torch.
After re-installing needles could not adjust them properly, realized that the needle under carriage (round U shaped pipe) was also bent so had to take it off and heat with tourch and straightend.

Good luck
