Bob M or someone here may have an answer for this. I have a good starter from an M that I would like to install on my T-6 crawler. They need a starter to run to the opposite direction. Is it possible to reverse the starter by re-wiring the field and/or brushes? If so, how? as always, Thanks!

Thanks in reply to Tractor Tom, 06-23-2005 19:09:30
Thank you for the good information, I will probably go new, used or rebuilt.

PS> My answer to Paul was a not intended to be rude, it was a joking reminder that I was looking for some useful and accurate information to make a decision.

Yes it can be done but most of the time they will not work very good and the drives also will not work. Your better off finding a used one or bite the bullet and get the new one. Been there and done that and have found its cheaper in the long run to bite the bullet

How would the starter drive be reversable? Going the other direction would make it kick/stay inward and not outward.

Wrong answer Paul300, but thanks for playing, we have some lovely parting gifts for you including a starter repair manual. FYI, there are CCW & CW final drives. CW direction starters were used on several IHC applications including many T series crawlers and power units. My question is mostly concerning the feasablity of rewiring the starter, that is not covered in the manuals. A new starter is almost $200 and a new final drive is around $50.

I was referring to re using the existing drive. It sounded like this was a swap "on the cheap",and once the cost of a new drive come into play plus the re working of the electricals, you might as well get a rebuilt unit with a warranty.

To reverse the starter, the positions of the grounded and insulated brushes need to be changed by 90 degrees in relation ot the field poles OR the connections on the field coils need to be swapped end-for-end.

Many starter armatures have a "helical" spline that the Bendix slides on. These CAN'T be reversed, as the starter drive for the opposite rotation would have the opposite slant to the helical splines.

Why not save the aggravation, and swap with someone for the correct starter???
