I"m riding along with my son and his wife as they move to CA. Logical route looks like I80, but I"ve never been across that part of the country. Any tips on what to avoid and/or not miss? Any major construction to go around?

Be warned that there is major construcion work in Nebraska between Omaha and Lincoln. They are in the process of changing from 4 lanes to 6 lanes, but during consruction there is often 1 lane each way. The speed limit is lower thru construction, and the fines are doubled if they catch you speeding in a construction zone. I haven"t heard much about west of Lincoln, but I think it is okay.

thanks for the heads-up. According to the state DOT websites, I80 has lots of ongoing construction in several areas.

I80 is HEAVILY traveled by big trucks, (over-the-road semis)and I avoid it if at all possible.

I80 around the bottom of Lake Michigan is always congested. Around noon or at night is the best. Rush hour, forget it.

I was thinking I might avoid that area by getting off I80 in Ohio and go south thru FortWayne and Peoria on state roads. Thanks for the info.

that's not bad, just use I-69 to drop south instead of U.S. 24. Save a little toll and miles and get off at route 49 to take US20 across to I-69. Route 24 is not bad west of ft wayne, take it across to 55 and drop around to 74 it is worth the extra distance. you won't miss anything other than the signs for Raegan's birthplace bypassing chicago. The air is so bad there it gives me a sore throat. As far as the heavy truck traffic once you get out of illinois traffic cuts loose and it's not bad at all.

That's a great route but not on a Farmall, seriously other than Nebraska you'll enjoy the drive! LOL

State roads will eat your lunch. Small towns every so often, stop lights out in the middle of nowhere, operators of land management equipment moving slowly, etc. Get on the big road and gie-er-done, Harley
