43 H Need a Head Start

I recently purchased a 43 H, it has a 6 volt system but came with a 12 volt battery. The previous owner had a switch put in the loop to the coil (hot side), there is no apparent ballast to resist the voltage down after it is running. I have ordered the service manual and the parts manual (from this site) but won’t be here for 3 weeks. I would like to get going on some improvements and get it running correctly.

My questions:

Is the ballast somewhere on the machine ?

What damage has likely been done to the coil, points and condenser – as I can not get it running

The number 1 cylinder is the most forward ?

I should be able to time it with the No 1 at TDC and the points just open or is it closed ?

I would check the point gap and take a look at the
points to see if they're pitted. Gap for mag is .013" and .020" for a distributor. If they're pitted I would replace condenser & points. That coil is probably cooked if 12 volts were connected. Here's a good procedure if have a distributor with a coil.

No Fire! Clean and dry distr. cap
Check for battery voltage at the coil. Use a volt meter or test lite.
Check for battery voltage at the points. Use volt meter or test lite.
Remove distr. cap, rotor & points cover, remove coil wire from cap and hold within 1/4" of a ground.
With points closed & ignition switch on, snap the points open a few times watch for any spark at the coil wire end.
No spark: may have dirty or burned points, bad condenser or coil.
Note:Coil primary (battery voltage) wire to points
must be attached to the + on the coil if the battery is + grounded.

Chris, the six-volt system on your H didn't require a ballast resistor. It would have only been needed when a previous owner dropped a 12-volt battery in it. In fact, it was probably originally equipped with a magneto. You can determine whether a ballast resistor is present either by visually tracing the coil primary hot wire back to the switch, or measuring voltage to your coil. A reading greater than 9.5 volts would indicate there is no ballast resistor present.

Running a 6-volt coil with 12 volts will burn the points and eventually cause the coil to fail. There are 3 ohm coils available which don't need the resistor to run on 12 volts. You should check to make sure which one is on your tractor.

#1 cylinder is indeed most forward.

With the #1 cylinder at compression TDC, the spark will occur when the points just open.

Is the ballast somewhere on the machine ?

Only if previous owner put one on. They didn't come with one on 6v systems

What damage has likely been done to the coil, points and condenser – as I can not get it running

First check for spark if non then:
Check for power on the Battery side of the coil. If there is power there check the distributor side. If power there check the points

The number 1 cylinder is the most forward ?

number 1 is the the front cylinder on all engines.

I should be able to time it with the No 1 at TDC and the points just open or is it closed ?

Spark is made as the points just open. So set #1 at TDC and turn dist. till points just open. Make sure rotor is lined up with #1 plug wire so your not 180 degrees off.
