bill: It includes letter series or newer gas tractors. Most new tractors after 1955 came with the new type cap. The exception seemed to be 100, 200, 130, 230 and 140. I don't believe these replacment caps are an improvment, as they rust out. I have old caps as good as the day they were new, all one need do is replace gasket in them.

The form has been posted on this forum lots of times and it is for any of the letter series tractors, I think.

Replacement gas caps info. NO GOOD ANYMORE in reply to Dente, 06-21-2005 14:24:24
The offer is no good anymore, I asked about it at my CASE\IH dealer a year ago, they laughed and said that the offer disappeared when CASE took over IH. So basically it's an urban legand now.

Milan: I have received about 10 caps from Navistar, in 4 separate orders since Case and IH became CaseIH. This as CNKS said was never a CaseIH program, the liability on this matter was never included in the buy out. Navistar is the company responsible for any liability to this day.

I received my first caps from IH probably 40 years ago, and yes even since the merger many dealers still will do the exchange for you. In the beginning IH dealers had an allotment for all elegable tractors each had sold new. It only ever included letter series or newer. Since that initial supply ther has never been an inventory on these at IH or later Navistar. After the orders reach a certain number they manufacture and ship. I would expect these orders become fewer each year, thus as time passes the wait time will become longer.

By the way my son got a couple of these as recently as one year ago.

Your dealer is nuts, the caps come from Navistar, the truck division of the old IH -- has nothing to do with the current company.

Yeah, takes a LONG time to receive. I think mine took about 6 or 7 months. I had forgotten I had ordered it. It was kinda like a really late Christmas present when it arrived.

You will get them -- I think they wait until they have a bunch of orders, then make up a batch. If you don't want to wait, they are available from OEM Tractor parts for $33 apiece -- kind of steep. Original type caps are $10.00.

Wish I could find one of the accessory caps with the built in gas gauge. That would be handy.Of course, they would have far worse venting problems I would imagine.

The best gas gauge made is a hammer handle.

This whole Navistar free fuel cap deal reminds me a lot of the GM sidesaddle fuel tank pickups (1973-1987) settlement that GM and the government came to a number of years back.It was a way of clearing the manufacturer of any liabilites down the road, but really didnt cost the manufacturer much real dollars.GM got to donate money to safety research, and offered a $500 rebate to sidesaddle GM owners if they bought a GM vehicle new to replace it.Thats all...the vehicles werent fixed/redesigned/scrapped....and millions of GM trucks exist with a defect. Now,thousands of IH tractors exist with substandard venting of the fuel tanks, yet no new caps in sight. Then again...that reminds one of another GM faux pas..the corroding tailgate straps that wont be fully replaced until the end of the year...at the earliest.

It was $1000 bucks toward a new GM vehicle and I used it with a smile. Mike

Whoa!

I think you are being a little unfair.

Navistar has sent out thousands and thousands of gas caps. I have recieved at least 10 in two shipments.

But you know the funny thing, the originals work pretty well, and if you don't ovefill your fuel tank, and if you are not an idiot, you won't have a fire. I overfilled a C one time, splashed gas on the starter, like an idiot tried to start it anyway, and it caught fire. It has never happened to me again, and I take responsibility for my actions. I didn't try to sue anybody for my stupid act. If you see gas splashing out of your cap area it is you that must stop the tractor. The giveaway was based on people who had gas splashing out and still continued to use their tractor.

Yours was probably lost in the mail.

I'm with you Andy, I really get tired of people bitching that they personally haven't profited by a lawsuit, that they weren't a party to, that was judged before they were born, on a product that they didn't own! Wait until some dealer today is successfully sued for selling a 1952 Farmall that roles over and kills the new owner and can't prove he told the guy not to make sharp turns at high speeds on a side hill nor did he provide an up to date instruction manual! When that happens, our lives will really change.

While on the subject of recalls and such...here's a trivia quiz for you.....
What is the only case in history of a manufacturer buying back a vehicle and destroying all of them (under the urging of the US Gov't of course)??

The late 80s Nissan Van.
With dozens of electrical problems that couldnt be fixed (despite numerous recalls),and hundreds of vehicle fires that totally destroyed the vans,Nissan had no choice but to pay wholesale market value and crush every one.(well,at least the ones that did get turned back in).
It cleared them of future litigation.
GM Saturn division had a similar problem with the first few thousand SLs when they were introduced.Quaker State supplied the anti freeze/coolant and admitted to GM that there was no corrosion inhibitor in it.GM re took possesion of them, scrapped half and serviced the other half and handed them out to Saturn dealers as executive/salesman cars. They voided the warranty on them all.

My Dad gave me my first vehicle when I was 20. It was a Jeep CJ5 with no top. He brought it home after he bought it from a bait shop in Detroit Lakes, MN for $150 bucks.

He told me it came with no warranty, written or implied.

I had no idea what he was taking about. One day the clutch linkage went out.

I was down there fixing it.

Dad's do not offer warranties!

I do wonder why I did'nt miss him more before he died.

Scott

Dont feel alone....I put in for one in late January and nothing yet.If you are down to using a rag for a cap,I wouldnt wait....buy one and keep the one that comes (if it ever does) as a spare.Thankfully I bought a new one in December, before I learned of the free one....otherwise my tank would have had no cap for 7 months now.
