First off, now I'm feeling really guilty cause I have a tractor question and haven't posted in a long time...like I am totally ignoring you guys when I don't have problems.
My excuse is that I am in college and it's taking wayyyy too much of my time! Sorry!
Anyway,
IH 350 D Utility...new regulator last year. Long story short, contacts were stuck, generator decided to be a motor and sucked down 3 batteries before realizing what was going on.
Getting a new regulator today...question(s)
could the generator have made the regulator stick, or did the regulator screw up the generator. Second, could it be that the wires are crossed on the generator causing the regulator to malfunction? Not looking forward to a new generator (and not going alternator at twice the price)but want to be prepared for "the worst".
Adding a nice story for Hugh....
Hubby moved some barn litter for me...got STUCK and kept on spinning...had mud up 4 inches past the rear axle. Took ME 3 hours to dig US out!
That was an exciting family adventure!

Thanks for any help guys.

Diana

Diana: That's right you have been ignoring us. I just thought maybe the corn is doing so well in Indiana, you might have gotten lost in the middle of a corn field.

Bob M has dealt with your electrical problem, and few of us will question his wisdom. Your in good hands on that one.

As for the exciting family adventure, I do take note of who got stuck, who dug it out, I guess US would be appropriate for the whole adventure. Big question here, did anyone swear? The main item here is you didn't subject his Camero to any offencive materials.

Hi Diana!

Most likely your regulator was simply worn out (they do that...). Or possibly some water got inside it which caused the contacts to corrode.

Anyway replacing the regulator, then making sure it's properly connected and that the base is grounded (it's tightly bolted to shiney - not rusty or painted - metal) should solve your problem.

----

Note you can tell whether the regulator is sticking closed by looking at the ammeter after you shut the tractor down. The needle should be centered at 0.

If the needle deflected at all to the left it tells you current is being drained from the battery. ...Bob M

Hi Diana, my experience with voltage regulators and Diesel engines is not good. My theory is that the problem is once a Diesel is started and the battery is recharged, the current draw on the battery is so low because there is no ignition system to feed, so the contacts in the regulator just sit and chatter all day. The way to solve this problem is to run with the head lights on so there is some current draw or convert to an alternator with a built in electronic regulator. Running with the head lights on during the day presents its own problem as the operator tends to forget to turn them off.

Do you have picture of the 350D in the mud? Years ago when I was young and I like to say inexperience others say foolish, I was disking a field with a 300U and went into a wet hole. Buried the 300U right up to the running boards. Our other tractor was a JD 420U and it couldn't pull the 300U out.

Thanks for all of the advice. There was a tiny amount of moisture in the regulator cap that we saw and both of us knew that wasn't good. I'm not so sure the lights are working on it, although I do have a new loom in it. I'll have to check that one out. Wonder if I could direct wire a boom box...better yet, a TV...even better a 12v refrig for my wine coolers, which I found I liked drinking while wallowing in the mud. As for the bad words that were said. I sure didn't say anything out loud and what was in my head was my business. Knew enough to keep my mouth shut, or I'd be doing the job myself next time! The only loud words were when a snake decided to pay a visit and I'm not so fond of snakes! Didn't get pictures...that would have REALLY P'd him off! The ruts are still there, though...hmmm. What is it with guys that they think that deeper in the mud is gonna give them more traction or something? I could see what was coming plain as day.
I also had to be very grateful cause one of those batteries that helped start the thing was THE Camaro battery! I might be owing hubby some bucks for this one if it won't hold a charge now. And I'm the one that spent the 90 bucks for the battery in the first place! (Birthday gift).
We'll be doing a lot of electrical testing while running next time since this problem appeared to be intermittent.
Thanks again and good to be reading the boards again, even if for a short time till school starts again.
