300 ute clutch won't disengage

I got this 300 utility this spring, engine runs good but when it is running I can't get it to go in gear (gears grind with clutch depressed). I can get it into gear when engine is off but tractor will move when I try starting it with the clutch depressed. The PTO works fine.

I heard maybe the clutch plate may be installed backwards (if the previous owner replaced it) or that these tractors may get stuck plates if they sit for a long time without running, which this one has.

Anyone know what to look for or what to do? Thanks

I had the same problem with my 300 Utility many
years ago. What I did was to push the clutch pedal
down, hook it to the running board with a heavy piece of wire, then squirt Marvel Mystery Oil
up in around the throw-out bearing and shaft (not
on the clutch itself). I left it that way all one
winter. The following spring, I unhooked the wire
and the clutch has worked great ever since. I had
tried everything to free it beforehand, and nothing else would come close to working.

A lot of tractors have that problem from sitting for a long time. Block the clutch pedel down for a few days, if that doesn't get it free, start it up in gear, the higher the better and drive it around. Hit the brakes as much as you can and always keep the pedel down. If that doesn't brake it free you will probably have the split the tractor and replace the clutch. I have one tractor that always has a cement block on the pedel when I'm not useing it.
