Could you or someone possibly assist me with a problem I am having with an International tractor model 444? It seems stuck in 4th gear and I would like to remove the top gear shift lever plate to see what is going on. There is one bolt of eight that I can't get out. It is at the back of the transmission cover just under the driver's seat and there is some sort of hydraulic mechanism there also so I can't even begin to loosen the last bolt. Any suggestions? Thanx.

Hi, many years ago had the cover off a 434 which is just an older model of 444. The only problem I remember was the hydraulic return line was in the way. Had to put front of tractor on upward slop so all the hydraulic oil would not run out, then disconnect return line at the coupling.

If you put tractor on a slope be sure to BLOCK the wheels so it will not run away when you are aligning the gears in the transmission.

Thanx JB2. Actually on this unit the metal block that the hydraulic lines feed into is what is stopping the last bolt from coming out. If I knew what was inside this unit I might take a chance at removing it.....or.....cutting the head off the last bolt with a torch. I wonder how much trouble that would get me into?

Hi Oldtymer, I know the block your are talking about. It has a shut off valve and slow/fast valve. Never had this valve body off so don't know problems one could get into. It must have been a shorter bolt on the 434 as I remember only being able to turn it with open end wrench and there wasn't enough clearance to remove the bolt but slid the cover forward enough to pass the valve body. The problem with our 434 was, it would jump out of 2nd gear going down a hill.
There was a detent on a fork shaft that was worn.

I also remember it was a bit of a struggle to get everything lineup and back together.

Good luck JB2
