Looks like Farmall Ms but is the fender in the foreground a W6? never thought about them being built on the same line. And yes, I agree, the photo is staged as there is no paint fog in the air and there is no way a man could paint an 8 hr shift day in and day out without a fresh air resperator.

Yup, the W-6s and Ms were built on the same assembly line- pretty much the same tractor. IH used to built Farmall As and Bs on the same line as the crawlers at Chicago Tractor Works!

The 1941 photos show the workers with masks. Of course the paint guys at the Case IH factory a few years ago didn't wear masks anymore- the robots did the actual spraying, the guys did the masking, maintained the equipment, and made sure the paint equipment worked.

These photographs are from the Wisconsin HIstorical Society website, with scanning paid for by the IH Collector's Club fundraising.

Dixieland put 3-4 more pictures in the Paint and Bodywork forum. There are some 10-20s and F-12s being painted and the workers are wearing masks. Ya, I know it is still not much protection.

Seems like vanity may have been a consideration in the picture above. However, there is no mask "stencil" on the painter's cheek. Maybe it was his first tractor of the day.

Maybe built on different assembly lines and painted on the same line. I agree that the axles appear to be masked. But I'm still wondering if some subassemblies were painted prior to assembly. The hoods are not installed here, and neither are the lights or wheel hubs. There is also something hanging kinda' loose under the fuel tank. Seems like it would have been very difficult to get paint on a lot of surfaces. Perhaps the tractors made several trips through the paint booth at different stages of assembly. In the picture in Guy Fay's 'Letter Series' book on page 53, you can see the paint spray coming from the nozzle.

"hanging loose"? that's the cover for the battery box.
