Thr younger generation of computer users frequent the chat rooms and also IM a lot.Speed is of the escence for them there. In those forums, caps amd punctuation are rarely used. They also do a lot of phonetic spelling ie u for you, 2 for too, ru for "are you", cu for "see you" etc. Not so much different than when you adopted the slang of your teenage peers. You can almost guess the age of a person by his style of computer keyboard use. Anything, in perfect syntax, grammer, and spelling is from an "old fuddyduddy" so when r we old guys going 2 get with it

Personally, I think Gordo is trying to compare spaghetti to sauce here. When people IM or go to chat they are basically doing rather idle conversation. Most here on the forum are asking questions seeking information about something or are responding with that information for them.

When I chat (I IM the spouse and kids daily) I 2 use the lingo as I pick it up, but IMHO when 1 is trying to xpres ideas and information 2 others I prefer the more traditional longhand.

As far as spelling and grammar go, the main point here is that you are being understood. Good spelling and grammar are like icing on the cake which makes it look nicer and taste better…

IMHO anyway.

I proof read everything I write. If it is hard to say, It's probably hard to understand. My 2 cents worth,
Mark

I don't think anybody in this forum is asking anybody to use perfect grammar, spelling or punctuation. All anybody is asking is that people at least make an EFFORT at it.

It's not the 2 r u lol style abbreviations that are the issue, it's the one long run-on sentence with no pauses for breath, no capitalization, no punctuation... If the word "decipher" has to be used, then you are not communicating effectively.

You made a grammatical error. "Positive" is an adjective and "positively" is the adverb you need to modify the word "reflects".The same error is in the use of the word "negative". This old grouchy teacher is playing your same game.

Says who? If he would have said "positvely" them also he would have had to say "negitively" and that sounds repetitive.

Okay, okay, I'm sorry I started this whole thing, but it seems to me that if you are asking for advice, you would have the common sense to ask in a way that most people would understand. To use caps and punctuation does not seem like that radical of an idea.

Not being an English teacher or major, positive or negative reads right to me. It refers to the reflection of the writer. Others may disagree. The advice that I was given was that you should write in the style in which you speak.

For our next topic let's (an contraction) discuss colloquialism. And be sure to buy the manuals for your tractor.

I guess, I'm still an old "fuddyduddy" I find myself spelling out two, too and to and other numbers also. But I do pick up some of the slang.

I guess I'm like you. It takes a while to get somewhat good with the English language and it's hard to change.

I saw on the news sometime age where the FBI hired these young girls so they could catch these men preying on young girls using the Internet.
They taught the agents the slang that teenagers
use when they're conversing. Hope they caught
a bunch. Hal

PS: Have you ever heard of Imperial NE? I have a cousin that lived there, but she's in an assisted living home now.

Hi All, my mother was a school teacher. Spelling, grammar and punctuation were also important in our family. Even when I was in secondary school she would always proof read and correct and make me do it over again. Only if we had computers in those days!!! Would have saved a lot of paper and ink.

But today's generation spelling is left up 2 ur fav spell check software and if ur really in2 computers u have speech recognition software.

We all owe a lot to those teachers and school wasn't all sports. My grandmother, aunt and uncle
were all teachers. The uncle later became a dentist. My old History teacher is still living
and is 91 years old. I called her when I was on the History Channel in 2003. Hal
