My M when it is running without a clogged fuel system(my current problem)but I'm taking it one step at a time. It pops through the exhaust unless it is at full throttle, but anything under full throttle causes it to pop and sound like it's missing. What could be causing this and how can I get it running smooth. Also when you first start after sitting for a while it smokes greyish almost white until it's warmed up and then if you give it full throttle it smokes black smoke. What causes it to smoke like this.

Could your timing be off a bit?

Just some thoughts:
Popping in the exhaust can be caused by too-lean fuel mix. It goes through the cylinder and then explodes when it hits the hot gasses in the exhaust manifold.
It can also be a mis-adjusted or burned valve. You can have good compression and the oil rings be worn out I had a cub that was like this.

You may need to turn the main jet adjusting screw
cw to close it some to lean out the carburetor.
Check that valve clearance after the engine is heated up to see if that cures the popping problem. Setting should be .017" hot. Hal

Sounds like it has bad valves, or the valves need to be adjusted. The black smoke says its running to rich. The other smoke sounds like a little water in the cylinders, but that is normal if it has sat a few days since condensation could be a factor there

Well, I've been trying to find out why it smokes, and trying to figure out the condition of the engine. I just ran a compression test on it and I got 115, 120, 120, 120.

Those compression readings look very good. What sparkplugs are you using? It may be overfueled
causing the smoke. Hal

I'm using champion spark plugs and when I took them out to do the compression they were pretty black showing that it was running pretty rich. I think that It could be fuel mixture. You think it's the valves that are out of adjustment making it pop at idle or could the carb cause it to do that too. At when it's running full throttle it doesn't pop and when i bring it down to idle from full throttle that's when it pops.

The carb will not make it pop like that, a lean running carb can cause it the backfire out the carb but not make it pop that way. Unless its ruuning really rich and the pop is gas burning in the exhaust. Valve adjustment will cause it to do that. I'd say you need to rebuild the carb if you can't get it to adjust like it should

My super M has always done that when its not under a load. You could probably lean it out if your not going to be pulling heavy.
