Yesterday on one of my infrequent visits to the 55 mile away CaseIH dealer, I saw a 140 in the lot. I'd never sat on an A/140 family tractor before, so I went to climb on. Then I looked at this thing. I didn't see anything to step on between the ground and the platform, short of stepping on the drawbar from behind and climbing over the back. (The seat was a newer one, with a high back and arm rests.) How does one gracefully get on a A or 140?

(by the way they are asking $4250 for the 140 with a Woods mower...sounded high to me)

I always figured that you should get on an H or M as you would a horse only with two steps instead of one. Right foot on the drawbar hoop,
left foot one the axle housing then swing your right leg over the seat.

I was going to mount a seat like that on my A...one of the ones with arms, sliding adjustment, and spring suspension. Not only did it not look right, the aftermarket seat made it very hard to get on/off the tractor. Worse than with the stock seat.

Beeen there, done that. Try loading 100 bales of hay from the field onto a trailer towed by a 140- working entirely by yourself. Tiring!!!

This thread has given me a couple of chuckles, particularly Paul in Mich."s description of the proper "mounting procedure"! I started driving our A at 7, and had to climb the back drawbar, as the front was out of reach. My grandfather bought it new in 1942, and he could still get on it into his late 70"s with two crutches and two hip replacements! He did build a small step below the pedals and mount from the front, but even after growing up, I"ve still get on it from the rear using Paul"s basic method. When I bought my "45 A, it came with a cobbled-up front step similar to Gramp"s, and that seems to work, though I"m thinking of removing it as it"s uglier than a hedge fence. Long legs are a definite advange, but it"s worth the aggrevation to be able to set in the seat of one of the best tractors ever made!

If it had a front loader on it, you could use that to lift yourself up to the front grill / radiator area and then walk along the hood back to the seat...

Evan: For the life of me, I don't know what is wrong here. I'm just weeks away from 63, 6'2" and weigh 250 lb. Was up to 282lb before the diabetes hit. I still get on the 130 same way I did 47 years ago. Put my right foot up on platform between brake pedal and fender, left hand on steering wheel and right hand on steering shaft and up I go. I can still be in the seat ahead of most guys in their 20s. Now I realize my long legs do give me a bit of an advantage.

Now I do have the Woods mower on my Super A, just about have to step on that, but I only do it when mower is down on ground. I have the cultivator tool bars on my 140 but never use them for a step, too slow.

Time to get in shape guys.

Hi Hugh, I'm pushing 73 and I can still get on those tractors. You have to start young and keep doing it. Hal

Easy ways to mount a 140:
For folks less than 30 years old:
Put left foot in center of rear wheel casting, grab steering wheel in right hand and vault into the seat.

For folks older than 30 years old:
Leave cultivator bars on tractor year-round. Step on cultivator bar with right foot, grab steering wheel with right hand and step up to the seat.

For folks needing an elevator:
Requires tractor have front cultivator bars. Start tractor while standing away from left side (must be in neutral), run front hydraulic down to bottom position, walk around to right side, step onto the cultivator bar, reach over to the hydraulic controls and raise cultivator bar. Enjoy the scenery as you gain altitude. At the apex of the cultivator lift position, grab steering wheel with right hand and piroette into the seat.

This 140 had fenders on, so I could't step on the axle housings (which is what I use to step up to my 350). I had to grab the seat from the back, step on the drawbar, then step up into the seat, then down to the platform and squeeze into the seat. The wheel was pretty tight to the seat, barely enough room for my legs under the wheel. Did the 140's come with this big padded seat with a back and arms, or was this an addition to this particular tractor?

Evan, You"re a wise man beyond your years. YOu figured out the proper way to mount a 140, 130, SA1, SA, and A at first glance. It is quite a simple process to place your left foot on the drawbar, grab the steering wheel with your right hand while planting your right foor firmly on the right rear tire while grabbing the left side of the seat with your left hand and then gracefully sliding your left leg between your right armpit and right leg onto the operators platform, then, providing you didnt trip the seat causing it to flip backward, scoot your butt onto the seat and follow that up with bringing your right leg aboard. Its is a simple process, that is, until you hit that 60 year old mark, arthritis sets in, and you"ve gained that 80 extra lbs. Then you begin to ask why IH didnt make it easier to mount one of these offset tractors. Lots of owners have built their own front mount step which may or may not be easier. I"m 65, and still mount my 1940 A the old fashioned way, just a little slower.

I bought my A when I was in my twentys and it toook about 30 years for me to realize that it was a pain to get on and off.

Evan, The drawbar is the easiest way in my book, when the drawbar is mounted foward, that makes a very convient step! Some guys have fabricated their own step off of the final drive bolts, grab the steering shaft and away you go!

I have an A with the under belly rigging for various equipment pieces including a loader, plus, I have an add on live power with reservoir left of the seat. I cannot climb up the back so I must go up the right front by grabbing the steering column and swinging up. Get's tougher as I get older. think I'll build a step.

I have never been that interested in a 100 or 140 size tractor but after all this discussion, I don't even want one! Seriously I am ungraceful enough mounting H's and M's the little guys sound way to difficult. LOL Dick Davis
