could someone tell me the proper silver/gray to paint the rear wheels of my A, available locally in a rattle can? I have tried two different ones, and am not satisfied. Thanks.

With the brilliant shine of today's Red paint making these sweet ol' machines look so much better than when they were new, I feel the wheels need an extra shot as well. I buy the spray can "Chrome" paint because it has the brightest "silver" look to go with the Red. But, as said here, it is a matter of taste.

I have found that the IH Argent spray can does well or an Eastwood restoration product called Detail Gray is also a good match.

The one you're satisfied with?

Originally, the rims were galvanized, not painted. Go down to the home depot and look in the plumbing section where the iron pipe is. That's the correct color. It's more of a light grey than a silver.

Originaly the rims were galvinized and when dealers repainted years ago they would use aluminum paint. the dealer i worked for always brushed it on so to me that is an authentic restoration.

Howard, there was some folks here in North Platte that had some custom silver mixed that had flecks in it to make it look like galvanized
it looks really good.

Cowman, my thoughts exactly. A quart can of Rust-o-leum aluminum and a good soft brush will take care of quite a few rims, and will look very good.

Galvanized Finish in reply to Nebraska Cowman, 06-16-2005 06:48:29
Was the original galvanized finish not very durable? Wondering if anyone has ever tried to re-galvanize. There is a plater near here that says he can do it, but I am leery of the results - and it ain't cheap. Jeff

The original finish was electroplated galvanized. This process places a thin layer of zink on the steel (less than .0001" I believe). The zinc oxidizes (that grey smudge on your white clothes after handling galvanized iron) at the thickness of electroplate, it won,t last very long (unless electroplated for a long expensive time). Hot dipped galvanizing uses a molten bath of zinc with a deposit in the range of .005-.010" This thickness will last three lifetimes. High line towers for electrical power distribution are hot dipped. They last. The finish is not quite as smooth with hot dipped, but the results are great. One issue not mentioned here is that there are now primers on the market to increase the sticking of paint to galvanized metal. Clean (deep rotary wire brush) then prime, then silver paint is a good alternative. Hope I helped some, JimN

Thanks. I think you're right. 100 microinches of electroplate probably didn't take much abuse, and the hot dipped finish would be too rough. Looks like paint is the only good alternative. I might practice with a faux finish grey/aluminum that would look a little like galvanized. Jeff

Tom, I dont know of a proper color for the rear wheels other than what you find appealing! Originally the rims were galvanized, if the wheels were new they would be brighter than an old oxidized wheel. I have found that I like rustoleun aluminum, and I paint that on with a brush with very good results. What ever looks good to you!
