I often hear you guys talking about 560 's
I think I hear you saying nice things about them
Now I like my red tractors as well as the next guy
I also wasn't very old when we TRIED to get some work out of a 560 so only know some of the problems
It was dad's first diesel, he wasn't very mech. inclined
We had an understanding dealer who gave us a WD9 2 diff times to take the 560's place
Dad's long gone so I guess I'll never know
I do know of 3 others in our area that were also considered lemons???
Also have a neighbour with 460D that's never given any trouble and has a pile of hours

Kruss: I've owned 16 Farmalls in my day, most of them bought new or near new for use on family farm. Of the 16 at least one of them came from each series letter, super letter, 00, 30-50, 40-60, 06, 56 and 66.

Without question the two most efficient tractors of the group were 656 and 560 diesels and not necessarily in that order. I really wouldn't want to rate one above the other. Of those 16 tractors I probably abused the 560 more than any other. It was turned up to 90 hp and worked as 90 hp tractor for 11,000 hours in 17 years. That is the only tractor of the 16 I ever did that with. More hp was needed, and at that time money was not there to trade for more HP.

Yes the glow plugs were a bit of a pain. You must remember this was in the pioneer days of direct start diesels. Why not wait for the glow plugs, prior to that time one had to wait for pup start or gas to diesel switch. It was just part of the evolution.

Finally, some farmers probably should have stayed with and retired with the horse, ox or mule. The tractor was the beginning of the mechanical age of farming. I watched a next door neighbor go through this, never really worked with the tractor, just fought with it.

I remember reading here that when new from the factory the 560's had some kind of problems with the rearend gears(hopefully someone will correct me if I'm wrong). This is probably what happened whith the one your dad had. I believe there was a dealer update that solved the problem for the most part, and if there's an "X" stamped on the serial plate of the tractor then it's had the update done to it. Again- someone please correct me if I'm wrong...just going off memory here!

We sold out last 560 in 1988, it was a deisel with an untold number of hours. The biggest issue these tractors have is the GLOW PLUGS!!!! You have to use them to start the tractor - no matter what the temp is. To many people jump on one and crank it till the battery is dead or give it a shot of either - both of which is just plain hard on that tractor. These tractors have been worked for 40+ years and maintenance and is the main determinant value.

I've always been big on operating equipment inside the envelope of its design. Don't expect more out of it than the engineers designed it for. Most of the farmers I knew when I grew up in the fifties and sixties lacked true mechanical skills too. They didn't service the tractors like they were suppose to or they asked too much out of them and hence they thought they had a lemon. For instance my preventative maint. manual says to change the PTO fluid every 50 hrs but most farmers wouldn't know how to adjust it or change it or think anything needed to be done unless it broke. Some of them added turbo chargers for more power and wondered why the transmission gave them problems. Take care of it and you will be rewarded. Abuse it and you will pay.

I often suspected that some of the problem was that all the operators of this tractor thought they had a BIG tractor and treated it as such and the same probably applied to the other three in our area. From an M or SuperM to a 560 seemed like a big jump back then and maybe everyone got carried away.

I dont know about farming with one, I pull one and been pulling it about a year, so far I havent had any problems but spinning the hub inside of the wheel. It may come apart someday but for now I am satisified
