Can anybody tell me what would cause smoke to come from engine oil fill tube on a International 184? This is'nt just a little smoke, it makes a sort of blue smoke cloud as the tractors being used to mow lawn. Thanks for any input!

My '53 C does the same thing, and the oil pressure was a little on the low side. Switching to 20W50 oil helped with both. I think in either case, it is time for a rebuild.

Casey is probably right, but before you do the big nasty, I would go to your local GM parts house and buy some "Top Engine Cleaner" (about $8 for a 12 oz. can), pull the plugs, pour evenly into each cylinder and let soak for two or three days. Then turn engine over with the plugs still removed to blow out any excess (don't want any bent rods!), replace the plugs, start engine and run it hard under a load. It will smoke like hades for at least a short time. If you don't use the beast too often, sometimes you get a carbon/crud build-up on the rings/cylinder walls that freezes the rings up and keeps them from doing their job. Worked like a champ on my blue diesel tractor, and a heckuva lot cheaper than an overhaul. Good luck!

I've had good luck with Marvel Mystery Oil in the gas, too, to free stuck rings. But it works slowly.
