Within the 4-position switchbox is an asbestos covered coil resistor. Mine is damaged.

Can this coil be successfully silver-soldered, or can I replace it with a Radio Shack resistor of an equal rating - and what is the resistance rating? Thank you.

I measure 1 ohm on a 1948 C. Perhaps someone has a more sensitive meter. It probably makes a difference.

The parts manual lists the Delco-Remy part number as 814545. Maybe it is still available thru Case/IH? Does your switch have two resistor coils? One is the lighting dimmer, and the other changes the feild resistance of the generator when the lights are on. The field resistor coil in my C is a bare wire wound around a piece of mica, and the dimmer is the double coil with insulation directly on the wire.

Still trying to figure out all of this generator stuff, and every tractor I look at seems to have a different combination of generator, voltage regulator, and dimmer switch. It's also very possible that a previous owner installed a new generator/VR, which could negate some of the function of a resistor switch. It's all very confusing. No wonder people install alternators.

Actually the previous owner had no generator at all, and the switchbox was bypassed. He ran the tractor directly off the battery. So I'm trying to put it all back together again with headlamps and a 3-brush generator/VR combo.

I believe your 1ohm reading is quite accurate, but thank you for the proper part number. I may just bypass the dimmer circuit.

My new milliohmmeter only has a 1 ohm resolution, so the resistance could be anywhere between 100 milliohms and 2 ohms. At those levels it makes a difference how hard you press on the connections. If your resistor is already broken, it wouldn't hurt to try and braze it. The braze alloy will have a lower resistance than the wire, so it shouldn't develop a hot spot or increase the resistance of the system. Biggest problem I've run into in restoring my '48C is corroded and rusty connections. They can add a lot of resistance in the circuit and really upset the intent of the original design. Good luck. Jeff

There is a pretty good article on three brush generators at:

I'll try to attach the link on this message.
