Question on governor for M?

I have a 49 M that was my Dad's and use it to hay with. When I bale with my IH 27 baler which is a little baler the governor is always varying the rpm. I know it doesn't do it when I have my sickle bar mower on. I have never had the governor apart, but is there springs in there that can get week or is the baler just making it work that much?

Sounds perfectly normal to me. Every time that plunger smacks into the hay in the chamber, the tractor is going to grunt a little. It's not a constant load like a sickle bar mower or a forage harvester.

Bob - It may simply be the governor reacting to the cyclicly varying load from the baler on the PTO.

If RPM's vary in unison with the baler plunger strokes, it's the governor just doing it's job trying to hold the RPMs constant.

FWIW I do a lot of baling with a JD 4455. Even with a "big" tractor like this the tach shows about 50 - 75 RPM variation exactly in time with the plunger.

The beauty of the IH governer is that it can respond fast enough to give the tractor more throttle when hay is being compressed and then back off when the plunger is retracting. I doubt the engine is varying RPM's, just throttle setting and sound.

If this is what you are experiencing just sit back and enjoy it.

If you have a IT manual go through the adjustments for the linkages and the two screws inside also yes there is a spring inside just pop the cover you will loose maybe a teaspoon of oil and see if she streched out you cant miss it. Also if you dont have a IT manual go to tractor supply or binder books and get yourself one it sure does help. JON
