The seals are leaking by the brake shoes.Took the brake cover off,the brake hub is off.Took the bolts out of the housing, the shaft or bearing housing will not move.Does the top plate of the transmission have to come off in order to get this seal replaced.Thank you for any help

TWL, That reminds me of my younger days as a mechanic. Farmer did the same thing, only it was a W-9, if you are familiar with what one of those ornery beasts looked like. Well it was one of my first jobs. Broken casting, bull gear in the way. Well that job we had to do in the barn, in the alley, with tie blocks for cribbing to hold the bugger up. Those wheels with fluid and weights were a bear to move out of the way. Some how we did it. But he never forgot how stupid a move he made. Those were the days, don't make any more please. Sorry to have to add to your grief TWL. Always come on here in advance and ask the boys I'm sure their are plenty here that have had some experience. Old Dutch

If you need to replace the bearing housing, you have a little work to do. I broke the bearing housing on my H the same way you broke yours. I think the H & M are put togather about the same, so here's what I had to do. Remove the axel housing & axel, top transmission cover (ugg), and the bullgear. The brake bearing housing catches behind the bullgear, and it won't come out with the bullgear in place. On the H, I had to rotate the brake bearing housing a little to get the bullgear out & back in. Don't know if the M is the same. the bearing housing has a O-ring around it, and my broken housing had a cork O-ring, but the replacement I got from the boneyard had a rubber O-ring that was still useable. Hope this helps, and good luck. ken

If the seal is the only problem, it can be removed without removing the top cover or the bearing housing -- just take a pick or screw driver and carefully remove it.

You made the same mistake many have before you. That bearing housing is a cage on the inside that supports the pinion shaft bearings and the pinion gear is on the inside of it. It can't be removed without taking the bull gear off the shaft and letting the bull gear drop down out of the pinion cage slot that the bull gear runs in. Pulling on the flange without removing the bull gear results in much grief as you have found out. You do not need to remove this cage (as others said) to replace the pinion seals. The seals run on the brake drum hub, so once you pull the brake drum off the pinion shaft, you can pry out the old seal and press in a new one. Hope you are able to get it fixed, but it's going to be a pretty big job now that the pinion housing is broken. Good luck, and you are not the first one to do this.

To remove the casting, you must take the bull gears out of the way. If you persist in pulling on the castong , it will break and then you have an excellent excuse to remove the transmission cover.
Just get a couple chisels, new Vise Grip, hammer, and patience then go to work without removing the casting. Replace the old WIDE seal with 2 new ones from your IH dealer. Put a dab of Permatex or silicon sealer on the outer surface of the new seals when installing. Put white grease or gun grease in between the 2 seals before replacing the drum. Carefully clean the drum surface that contacts the seals and lube it also before installing.
Take your time, get a friend to help, and have at it!

Drill the bearing shell and put a good size sheet metal screw in it and use a wrecking bar to pull it out. I used a air hammer to get one side out and the screw on the other. Screw was much easier./
