Clutch Locked up - Help

Split my 400D, replaced the clutch disk, then joined the tractor, but now the clutch is apparently locked to the flywheel/pressure plate. With the unit running, trying to shift out of neutral causes nasty grinding noises. I can shift with the engine off. I adjusted the clutch according to written instructions, still to no avail. I locked he pressure plate open (with 3 bolts that draws the plate up), and still it is connected to the flywheel. I even put the tractor in gear, shoved the clutch as far as possible, tried to start it, and of course, the tractor moved forward. I was hoping this would free it, but the tractor tried to climb a couple cinder blocks. Nothing I can do frees the clutch disk.

I removed the inspection plate and observed the operation of the three clutch release levers against the throwout bearing, and they appear to be working.

Now the confession. When joining the tractor (using threaded rod), I got the alignment off center and cocked to one side, and applied a lot of force with the rod to the point of having the ring gear scratch the inside of the bell housing. Could see that the clutch shaft was cocked inside the pressure plate. Noticed the problem and tried again, getting it joined.

Could I have screwed up the clutch disk with the clutch shaft when it went in cocked? What did I do wrong? The power take-off spins when the handle is engaged, if that means anything.

Dang, just finished painting it, putting in all new wiring, TA, along with a bunch of other stuff, now I suppose it must be split again. How depressing!

Oops, yes you forced it too much. You'll have to take it back apart and fix your mistake. A lot of us are self taught but the tuition comes high.

In reading your post, I am thinking that you have installed the clutch disk backwards. On some applications, the clutch disk will be marked flywheel side, to flyweel, so some such marking. If it is installed with that side towards the pressure plate, whatever springs, rivets, etc that pertrude will be against the flywheel and it will act exactly as you have described. This is especially so with clutches that have a spring loaded center for a smooth start up. Let us know what you find. Been there and done that.

I have a few thoughts for you to consider. My first question is the clutch disk in correctly? On some applications if the clutch disk is put in backwards it will not release because the hub is interfering with the flywheel.

By forcing it together you may have damaged the clutch disk by bending the hub area forward causing the clutch to bind up. The reason your PTO turns is that it is driven by the splined hub in the pressure plate and the hollow tube that drives the hydraulics and the PTO. The clutch shaft will interfere with the clutch disk before the PTO shaft in the pressure plate because of the additional length for the pilot bearing which brings me to the other thought.

The pilot bearing may be damaged to the point that it will not rotate freely. Since the outside of the bearing rotates with the engine, a bad bearing will not let the shaft in the middle stop allowing the transmission gears to stop.

Any of these will take a split to correct.
