Hydraulic Pump gets very hot...OK??

I have a PTO driven hydraulic pump for a DuAl loader on a Farmall 300.

I noticed yesterday that the pump and the fluid lines near the pump were very hot...too hot to touch (probably around 150F). Is this normal? If not, what could be wrong? Thanks!!

Ron, if you have any screens or strainers in the hydraulic circuit, check to be sure they are clean. Duall loaders are noted for using cut tire sections for their seals in the cylinders. This along with the fact that you may or may not be using HY-Tran for the hydraulic fluid in your system, or something similar, eats that rubber up like it's going put of style. Seen many strainers on the 300's,350's,400,s etc, plugged so solid that it collapsed the screen in the reservoir. Make a thorough check of the system. Oil will get hot at ambient temps., but not to the extent you describe. One other thing to check might be? Has the pump been getting slower? It may be that you have an internal leak in one of the cylinders. This would cause a reciprocal reaction to the function of the loader.I still believe you have a restriction in the system. I wish you good luck.

They get hot but not too hot.

150 deg sounds a little warm. The loader may have closed center valves (or some other restriction) and the pump is having to pump through the relief valve when the hydraulic circuit is just idling. The hydraulic pump should have a free path to the tank when you are not using pressure to move anything.

Does the engine sound like it is laboring with the pump engaged and no hydraulic use? If you can’t tell a difference between when the pump is running and not, then you have normal heating as others have suggested. If you can tell that the engine is working more when the pump is running, then you have fluid passing the relief valve which will cause it to get hot!

It's perfectly normal for the fluid to heat up. That kind of thing happens when the fluid is pumped under pressure over and over and over.
