I had carefully marked everything on the distributer on my 47B before I removed it for cleaning and painting.(The tractor)I guess I was thinking that the engine on a tractor on stands won't be turned over.Well I was wrong! In fact I did it myself to paint all of the front pulley. Now I have a perfectly painted motor with new gaskets that I don't want to remove any parts from to find TDC.Are there any marks on the flywheel or does the way that the crank pulley goes on give any hints to TDC,Or do I need to use the finger in the sparkplug hole trick to get it close and go from there. My wife and I are heading out to the Cowmans country to meet up with our two of our grandkids so they can spend a month or so with us. So if you have the answer for my mistake,I won't be able to thank you until this evening.Thanks,John.

Just to add one clarification to what El Toro said, To see the timing mark, remove the hand hole cover on the bottom of the bell housing. The mark is on the outer surface of the flywheel and aligns with a rib/pointer on the cover on the front side of the bell housing.

Use that finger or thumb on No1 while someone hand cranks the engine until you feel compression.
Then look for your timing mark on the flywheel and then keep slowly cranking until the timing mark is aligned with the indicaor. Remove the distrbutor cap and see where the rotor is pointing, should be at No1. If it isn't remove
distr. and rotate rotor to No1 and reinstall.
Look for that timing mark and put some chalk on it so it's easier to see. Should have DC/1-4 stamped into the flywheel. Just chalk the timing mark. Hal

Those marks on the flywheel are VERY faint so look carefully just as the #1 piston comes to TDC.
